Open Streets Project Releases Best Practices Guide

Posted on by Mike Samuelson

spacer The Open Streets Project was formed to share information about open streets and increase the number, size, and frequency of initiatives occurring across North America. With that goal in mind, we are releasing the Open Streets Guide, which details best practices taken from across the continent. The guide will also be available for purchase as a paper copy in late March.

The open streets movement has grown from only 11 initiatives in 2005 to over 70 in 2012. The Open Streets Guide provides a new critical resource that compiles information from initiatives across the continent in one location. The Guide features an introduction to open streets, a summary of the initiatives in North America and case studies of 67 initiatives from across the continent. In addition, the guide also contains a summary of best practices taken from initiatives from North and South America, and links to additional resources that can provide further guidance for cities organizing local initiative.

“The Open Streets Project aims to support this exciting movement by providing advocates and organizers a comprehensive overview of organizational and implementation strategies,” said Mike Lydon, Founding Principal of The Street Plans Collaborative. “We believe the Project will be a catalyst for the continued growth of the open streets movement.”
