Yesterday the restaurant community was shocked to hear that two senior chefs from Heston Blumenthal's famed British restaurant the Fat Duck were killed in a car accident in Hong Kong. The BBC confirms chefs Jorge Ivan Arango Herrera and Carl Magnus Lindgren, along with their driver Wong Kim-chung, were killed when a bus driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into several cars as well as another bus. 56 people were injured in the accident, and the bus driver has been arrested for "causing death by dangerous driving." He has since been released on bail.
According to the Daily Mail, Blumenthal is also in Hong Kong, and was traveling in a separate cab at the time of the accident. Depending on who you ask, the chefs were in town for "a private event" (BBC) or "to promote a new Blumenthal restaurant" (Daily Mail). Blumenthal was scheduled to travel on to Australia for a food event, but has cancelled his appearance.
Hong Kong media released jarring footage of the wreckage scene, as well as photos of a devastated Blumenthal at the mortuary, where he identified the bodies. Fat Duck head chef Jonny Lake is also in Hong Kong, and up until a couple days ago had been tweeting photos of the chefs' progress at the Mandarin Oriental.
The international restaurant world reacted to the tragedy on Twitter with shock and sadness. British chef Sat Bains called the news "heart breaking" while Noma chef René Redzepi said, "Unimaginable - your chefs are your family." The team at Andoni Luis Aduriz's Mugaritz in Spain offered condolences, as did chef Raymond Blanc and US chefs Thomas Keller and David Chang. An official spokesperson for the Fat Duck told the BBC, "We are deeply saddened by this tragic event and our hearts and prayers are with their families and loved ones."
