Achievements with Counters Borked by Recent Fix

Date: Feb 14, 2013  |  Written by Laura Hardgrave  |  Posted Under: Buzz  |  DISQUS With Us: No comments yet

An odd thing happened yesterday morning after the recent GW2 fix and corresponding downtime. A fairly large chunk of players logged in with less achievements than before. Most of the achievements affected were ones with a counter. The Slayer achievements, for instance, are what were commonly affected. Players found that the achievement counters in most cases were brought down to one point away from obtaining the achievement– 999/1000, for example. A previous fix also affected the pumpkin carving achievement from Shadow of the Mad King in a similar manner.

This odd achievement borking (yes– I hereby declare it a word!) doesn’t seem to have happened to everyone, and the achievements it affects seem random. ArenaNet hasn’t found a solution to the bug yet, but some achievements may be easy to re-grab if players are just missing one kill or count to tip them over. Other achievements like the pumpkin carving one aren’t as easy of a fix until the holiday rolls around again.

Here is what Community Manager Aidan Taylor had to say about the matter:

We are aware that several of the slayer-style achievements have been affected by a recent fix that was implemented to combat an crashing issue.

We are also aware that this may have affected other achievements and if you notice any other achievements that may also be affected feel free to post below, so we can look into them.

If you noticed this bug affecting your achievements, you can report the issue in this forum post.

Dungeon Update: Tweaks to Arah P4′s Simin

Achieving the perfect balance on tough bosses in explorable mode dungeons and fractals is never an easy task. ArenaNet’s Robert Hrouda has been adjusting one of the most difficult bosses in explorable mode Arah– the fourth (Seer) path’s Dwaynas High Priestess Simin fight– and is still making adjustments to the fight. This boss was often skipped by groups before the recent changes. Here is his latest update on the changes being made next:

Hey folks, sorry about not having posted in here for a while! But update time!

I took another look at Simin after the spark AI fix, and got more feedback concerning the difficulty. The sparks were a step in the right direction, but it wasn’t enough. I’m going to reduce her stealth healing this time around while I consider other possible changes. As it stands right now she has some nice mechanics with the tears and the spark running, which emphasizes the teamwork we like to see. However all that aside, her healing turns it from a fun mechanics fight to a more hard-nosed DPS check for even the most mechanically skilled groups.
Personally I would much rather see people having fun with mechanics than having meet a DPS check. Considering also there isn’t a visible meter to check your group DPS versus her healing, groups can spend hours doing this and reaching the same result, despite meeting the mechanical skill threshold.

I will eventually change her stealth mechanic so she doesn’t heal during it and instead does something else (like an enrage moment where she is invulnerable), but for now I’ll just take her healing down a peg to reduce the DPS needed to overcome the fight, so people can enjoy the mechanics of it.

Keep reading to see a followup post.

GuildCenter Exclusive: Tier 1 Guild Shakeup

As listeners of GuildCenter know, we called this one weeks ago and it has finally happened; Sea of Sorrows is imploding kiddies! After many discussions, Fist of the Empire (FoE) and Aggression (AGG) have left SoS for a new home on Blackgate. We are also hearing rumors swirling of MERC and ND following them to Blackgate with several guilds throwing into the kitty together to help fund the transfer for some of the transferring guilds; transfers to Blackgate are going for 35 gold per person. (Side note, MERC advertises a 1500 player base and ND advertises an 850 player base). VotF allegedly was planning a return to the European servers but are currently waiting to see how things shake out. Hmm, 90% of the defunct Ascension Alliance back on the same server minus Team Legacy (because no one wants them of course) … coincidence? We think not!

And why is this happening? Well from what we’re told here at GuildCenter, most of it centers around the drama caused by Tsym (who apparently is planning to stay on SoS) and privately is throwing quite the hissy fit about these guilds departure.  But why would these upstanding guilds decide to depart suddenly?  Well you’ll just have to stay tuned to the upcoming GuildCenter to hear the details (hint hint hint!!)

What does this mean for the T1 NA bracket? It means things are about to get goooooooooooooood.

More to come, stay tuned!

Upcoming Changes to PVP Tournaments

Date: Feb 7, 2013  |  Written by Draegan  |  Posted Under: News  |  DISQUS With Us: No comments yet

From the Guild Wars 2 Official Website:

Hello, everybody! I’m Tyler Bearce, one of the game designers on Guild Wars 2. Thank you for participating in Temple of the Silent Storm Week, where PvP paid tournaments were temporarily changed from 8-team, 3-round events, to 2-team, single round matches. So far, the response to this change has been overwhelmingly positive!

Due to your feedback, we’ve decided to keep this format for paid tournaments. At the beginning of each week, we will select a different map to feature in all paid tournaments for that week. The free tournament format won’t change. The next map will be “The Battle of Kyhlo.”

A number of players have mentioned that while they like our new tournament format, they’d be much happier if we also had matchmaking. So we are happy to inform you that we have begun testing our ratings and matchmaking system. Currently in-game, players are rated based on their performance and teams are matched based on those ratings. However, this system is still being tested and tuned; we’ll have more information about this in future updates.
Thanks for continuing to support us! See you in game!

Flame and Frost: The Gathering Storm Begins February 26th

Date: Feb 7, 2013  |  Written by Laura Hardgrave  |  Posted Under: News  |  DISQUS With Us: No comments yet

The second installment of Flame and Frost, Guild Wars 2′s current multiple month world event, is quickly approaching. ArenaNet released some information about what Flame and Frost: The Gathering Storm will have in store for Tyria. Among the high points? A new PvP map, guild missions, two-rated team play for structured competitive PvP, and the ability for players to choose their own daily achievements. Here’s a bit about the new PvP map and guild missions:

Brand New PvP Map – Spirit Watch

This peaceful green vale, nestled between cliffside shrines to the norn Spirits of the Wild is about to echo with the sounds of combat. In Spirit Watch, players will score bonus points by capturing the Orb of Ascension and running it to any of the three shrines on this newest PvP map.

Team Up for Guild Missions

Join your fellow guild members to take on an entirely new category of content! These missions, designed for coordinated group play, include everything from bounties to group puzzles to cross-country challenges. You’ll need to work together to complete the missions and earn new Guild Merits, which can unlock cool upgrades and rewards. It pays to be in a guild!

We’ll also, of course, be seeing more story unfold as the elements of fire and frost become unleashed. For more details, see ArenaNet’s updated Flame and Frost: The Gathering Storm information page.
