Mission

The Andrew Young School’s mission is to create and disseminate knowledge and analytical methods that are highly valued by policy makers and leaders in the public, nonprofit and business worlds; and to educate students who are highly qualified and sought after as policy analysts, program evaluators and designers of administrative systems. This mission is focused on economic and social development policy issues and problems, and on the design, implementation, management and evaluation of policies that address issues of economic and social development on the local, regional, national and global levels.

National Excellence

U.S. News and World Report’s latest rankings of graduate programs placed the Andrew Young School 23rd among the top 166 schools in public affairs: 4th in public finance and budgeting, 12th in city management/urban policy, 12th in nonprofit management, 24th in public policy analysis, and 26th in public management administration.

Student Body and Degree Programs

• 3,700 students enrolled per semester
• Four academic departments: Criminal Justice and Criminology, Economics, Public Management and Policy, and the School of Social Work
• Offers four Ph.D. Programs: one in Economics, one in Criminal Justice and Criminology, and two in Public Policy, one jointly with the Georgia Institute of Technology
• Offers six Bachelors Degree Programs, seven Masters Degree Programs, and three Graduate Certification Programs. 

Scholarship, Research and Global Activities

• More than 100 faculty and 30 research associates who, collectively, have worked in more than 20 countries
• Research funded by more than $31 million in active sponsored grants in calendar year 2011
• Nine research units: Center for Collaborative Social Work, Domestic Programs, Experimental Economics Center (ExCEN), Fiscal Research Center, Georgia Health Policy Center, GILEE (Georgia International Law Enforcement Exchange), International Studies Program, Nonprofit Studies Program, Public Performance Management Group
• More than 260 scholarly papers, chapters and books published or forthcoming in CY 2011
• Provides consultation and ongoing research regarding educational reform, evaluation of the HOPE scholarship, public finance, Medicare reform, rural health care, child policy, the improvement of health care at the end of life, environmental quality, and urban sprawl
• Operates the largest experimental economics laboratory (ExCEN) in the Southeast
• Provides technical assistance to numerous international agencies, such as the Asian Development Bank, the Government of Denmark, U.S.A.I.D., and the World Bank, among others
