Democracy Now!

We all know by now that Pacifica is the place to pick up news that the mainstream media won’t touch (usually because it offends big media’s corporate gatekeepers). Now, the Pacifica network’s new morning show, Democracy Now!, brings an added level of excitement to news listening.
Why? Maybe it’s the pointed way host Amy Goodman interviews the likes of Haitian Death Squad leaders. Maybe it’s the way she uses radio to lay out the background behind the biggest stories currently being investigated: The CIA-crack-Contra connection, Nike’s role in Indonesia ($2.16/day paychecks), corporate welfare, the spectrum giveaway & media monopolization, worldwide surveillance by the NSA, racism in the military & FBI, Clinton’s shady campaign contributors, Dole in Iraq in 1990.
The show looks at solutions, too: Ballot access, third party platforms (all too rare in the mainstream media), real campaign reform. Goodman’s attitude toward news was likely molded by being one of two journalists to witness the Indonesian military’s slaughter of 100 East Timorese in a 1991 funeral procession. Pleading for her life, she feels the soldiers only spared her after she yelled “We’re Americans!” The U.S.-supplied machine guns then turned elsewhere.

First hour airs weekdays at 8:30am, second hour at 2:30pm.
