Impact of Broad Graduates

By focusing on the most important dimensions of urban education leadership and management -- and by recruiting participants who have the passion, commitment and skills to get things done -- The Broad Center prepares its graduates for success and expects them to make an immediate and dramatic impact in their roles as education leaders. And they have delivered.

Broad Superintendents Academy graduates are making a positive impact and dramatically improving the education systems they serve, enabling good teachers to do great work and students of all backgrounds to learn and thrive.

  • While superintendent of Pittsburgh Public Schools, Mark Roosevelt raised $100 million for the Pittsburgh Promise, which provides college funding for every child in the district who is accepted into college and meets certain academic standards.

  • The graduation rate increased from 56 percent to 70 percent with increases in every student subgroup between 2009 and 2011 in Washoe County School District, Reno, Nev.  While Heath Morrison was superintendent, the district also achieved significant test score gains and narrowed the achievement gap in many subject areas.

  • Academic performance jumped more than 20 points in a single year in some schools as a result of the Strategic Staffing Initiative in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, N.C. Under the leadership of Dr. Peter Gorman, this initiative empowered top principals with proven track records to assemble teams to turnaround the district’s struggling schools.

  • As one of the first two states to receive funding, Delaware was awarded a $119 million Race to the Top grant to implement improvements to its education system. The effort, led by then state secretary of education Dr. Lillian Lowery, involved successful statewide collaboration among teachers, parents, superintendents, school boards, charter schools and the business community.

Working from within the system, Broad Residents are well positioned to identify, catalyze and lead the transformation required to ensure that every American child receives a world-class education. Broad Residents have achieved outcomes such as:

  • Achieved a 50 percent increase in the number of high school seniors in Long Beach Unified School District completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), besting other similar U.S. Department of Education-funded pilot projects nationwide. The result: Long Beach students received 25 percent more college scholarships district-wide that year, a record $40 million total.

  • Designed a principal vacancy forecasting model in Chicago which predicted vacancies with 97 percent accuracy. The result: by proactively recruiting more than 300 high-quality individuals to fill predicted vacancies, the district was able to fill slots with quality leaders without gaps in leadership.

  • Lowered amount of time principals spent on administrative tasks in New York City from 43 percent to 30 percent by reducing unnecessary central office reporting requirements. The result: principals had far more time to spend in the classroom, helping students and teachers succeed.
