Department of Geography
spacer

The Department of Geography at Portland State University has faculty with interests in a variety of topics. Faculty research and teaching programs include local, regional, and international interests in hydrology, water resources, Geographic Information Science, biogeography, sustainable development, urban environments, land use analysis, cultural studies, and K-12 geographic education.

As one of the founding units of the School of the Environment, the department has developed links with the departments of Geology and Environmental Science and Management and the USGS Water Resources Unit on campus. Regional geography courses are offered cooperatively with the International Studies Program. Human geography courses are part of the courses of study for the Certificate in Sustainability, the Minor in Sustainability, the International Studies Major and the Environmental Studies Major.

Portland State’s location in downtown Portland, Oregon provides amenities of urban living in one of the greenest cities in America as well as easy access to the coast, mountains, and high desert with plenty of opportunities for field-based classes.

Many federal agencies plus a variety of environmental and social non-governmental agencies are located in Portland, providing an array of potential applied research problems for student involvement.
