Michigan has 19 million acres of woods. It's almost a sensation overload when those millions of acres of woods burn in near-unison with the brilliant reds, oranges, yellows, and gold of fall.

Michigan's Sunrise Side, as the Eastern Lakes region is sometimes called, greets fall color in late September through mid-October. U.S. 23 is known as the Sunrise Side Coastal Highway. For more than 200 miles, the road follows the Lake Huron coastline so you get a gorgeous view of the water on one side and fall foliage on the other.

START: Alpena, Michigan (More: Forecast)
There's a lot of Great Lakes history to experience in Alpena. The Alpena and Thunder Bay Island Lighthouses are nearby. You can also visit the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary and take a glass-bottom boat tour of some of nearly 200 historic shipwrecks in and around the bay. Once you've gotten a little background on the region, head south on U.S. 23.
STOP: Iosco County (More: Forecast)
Hike in the AuSable River Valley in Iosco County, you can stretch your legs at the River Road Scenic Byway. You can hike, bike, or canoe through the Huron National Forest. Back on U.S. 23, the twin towns of East Tawas and Tawas City have cute downtowns with shopping and dining options.
