'How I Met Your Mother' gets season high ratings with Robin Sparkles

A big night for CBS’ How I Met Your Mother and The CW’s The Carrie Diaries. Coming off a final season renewal order, HIMYM delivered its highest rating of the season Monday.
The episode brought back Robin Sparkles and was seen by 10.3 million viewers and had a 4.0 among adults 18-49. That’s up 8 percent from the long-running comedy’s last original airing two weeks ago and ranked as the evening’s top-rated show.
The rise was all the more remarkable considering HIMYM was the only CBS show to perk up in the demo this week.
Put another way: Despite airing promos to 108 million viewers during the Super Bowl on Sunday, CBS’ lineup, including comedies such as Mike & Molly and 2 Broke Girls, was either flat or decreased slightly compared to previous airings. That’s disappointing for Broke Girls, whose stars Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs stripped down for a sexy and buzz-worthy pole-dancing ad during the big game (sort of like not getting a phone call after putting out).
The numbers show once again that sports is unreliable for promoting entertainment shows — particularly programs that have been around for awhile that viewers have already made up their minds about.
Meanwhile Fox lost some of its Following. After showing remarkable steadiness for Week 2, last night’s episode of the Kevin Bacon serial killer thriller slipped 12 percent. That loss matches the slippage of the drama’s lead-in, Bones.
Over on The CW, some great news for The Carrie Diaries. The freshman show had a disappointing series premiere four weeks ago, but appears to be getting more popular. Last week the 1980s-set soap moved up just slightly among some core demos. No big deal, just a tick of the needle. But last night the show jumped 40 percent among adults 18-49 to post its biggest rating of the season (check out Tim Stack’s recap here).
Also Monday: ABC’s Bachelor and Castle were down a bit. NBC’s Biggest Loser declined 13 percent and new drama Deception didn’t improve.
