About Momma

I was 78-years-old on February 22 and I'm amazed to see it. Mother of two sons and one daughter (Bloggers SEB and Cindyisms are two of them). Grandmother of three. Retired after 29 years+ at Michigan Bell Telephone and ten+ years with The Oakland Press. I was active with the telephone company union and a Dale Carnegie graduate. I work at crocheting, knitting, making ornaments, and other projects. With my husband I can 300 or 400 half pints of jam, chutney, plus cabbage relish, pickled beets and cinnamon fruit every summer to give away. I was clown doing parades, parties, and picnics for about 15 years. My other passions are music from the 50s through the 70s, reading, and of course blogging!

Just read Jay’s blog and saw he mentioned Dakota’s party.  Now I have been working on the lap robe and delayed posting anything otherwise.  My apologies for the oversight.  So here it is!

The cake announcing the event

Grandson, Dakota, leaves for training in the United States Navy On the 11th so It was decided that a surprise going away party was in order.  His mom. Debra, bought sailor hats, and planned every thing.  His sister Jasmine took care of the decorations.  His dad, Wes, took pictures  but I didn’t get all the info on his duties. The following are just a few of the pictures and I’m sorry but I can’t identify every one.

Debra on you right, with friends getting the hats ready for the arriving guests

Dakota’s dad, Wes was greeting everyone and helping people find places to park ( including me).

He sat waiting near the front door to greet people.

And me in mine.

I must confess we didn’t have them two fingers above the eyebrow like regulation

But our hearts were in it.

He was really surprised and couldn’t believe that all these people were here to celebrate with him.

Just a few of the many that attended.

Others that were there.

It got so crowded that I gave up trying to get around for more pictures.   But we all got hugs and smiles and were happy to have been able to attend.

Have a good start on a new career Dakota–We are proud of you.

the picture is angled but it is definitely Five inches.

Up this morning, fed Molly, took Brandy out to do her duty, then got dressed and pulled on those clumsy old boots in preparation of clearing the driveways.  I knew the Your Ride van would have trouble getting up the drive to pick up Jay so this was a necessary step to perform.  There was no wind so I didn’t get pelted with snow blowing back on my face and jacket.

After I backed the tractor back into the garage I came upstairs. changed into shoes, gathered a small tub of laundry, filled the washing machine, and stripped the bed.

Just then the driveway alarm sounded and I saw that the van, to pick up Jay, was having trouble trying to get enough traction to get off the street and get up the driveway,.  So it was grab a jacket, go out , start the pickup, clean off the windshield, reposition the truck so Jay could get in, and drive him down to the van.   Then I re-parked  the truck, came in, and grabbed the camera. so I could get this picture.

I took a couple of minutes to fix and eat a bowl of oatmeal and fruit while I read a few pages of the Bone Bed after putting the laundry in the dryer and started the sheets washing.  I read my E-mail and the blogs next and when the first load of laundry was dried it went onto the dining room table and the second load went from the washer into the dryer.

I’m going to set up the lap robe to be able to see ( light from overhead and the from the outdoors) now and hopefully sew for a while.

I’m going to hope we don’t have very much more snowfall today because I have appointments tomorrow at eight in the morning to get Brandy’s haircut and the oil changed in the pickup.

Stay warm if you got snow and comfy if you live where there ain’t  none!!!

Spent most of the day with my friend (the project) until I ran out of good sewing light!

spacer

Didn’t quite finish the O but maybe I’ll have some time tomorrow.

Just a small pain in my ribs this evening so I guess I’m coming right along. I played my CD by Fire Fall from Les and Anne as I sewed today.  Don’t feel bad if you don’t recognize the band because it was just getting started in the early 70s.  Two of my favorites on the CD are Just Remember I Love You and You Are The Woman.  I also put on the Orleans CD so it was kind of ‘remember when’ day as I worked.

Well It is a late supper because Jay had dialysis to day so I have to get that started now.

Spending Time!

My youngest son, Les, and wife Anne visited yesterday.  A few delightful surprises were in store.  The first being that Anne was in a walking cast and able to get around better. The next was this—

This wonderful gift package and –

–a Kentucky Fried Chicken Dinner for four. ( Boy I sure do love that and especially the biscuits.) For dessert I had bought a small German Chocolate cake.

Inside my gift was this.

Enough to keep me busy for a while.

I even sat last night until after 1:30 in the morning separating the straight edges from the inside pieces but then decided to put the puzzle away for another day.  The CD is another one of those (you know there are three or four songs that you really love on it) so you had to have it.  The DVD is is a new release and very funny so it will be a good addition to the library.  The Rowling’s book has been on my wish list quite a while so I was happy to see that.  Thank you Les and Anne.

Yesterday morning before the company came I climbed on the tractor again and used the snow blower on the driveway.  Of course this morning it could use it again but I have Sunday chores to do.

I must confess I did do something yesterday that I have only done with my daughter before now and I had swore I would never subject my kids to.  I asked Les to go with me to the grocery store.  I remember going with my mom when she was in her 70s and watching her leaning on the cart as she pushed it up and down every aisle.  At the time I wondered if she knew what she was looking for or was just happy I was spending time with her.  Well at least I had a list yesterday and I pushed I didn’t lean on the cart.  (But I was still happy spending time with my son bless his heart).

Hello World!  I made it!  Today I reached the ripe old age of 78!! Me who never thought I would live pass 40!  It has been a long row to hoe but the people I have met along the way have made the load a bit lighter.  I can’t begin to thank my friends, family, even mere acquaintances for how rich they have made my life.  The mistakes I have made have helped me to understand and make me manage my life a little better.  I still believe I was meant to be here to reach out and grab any hand in need of help.  Maybe not with money but at least with encouragement and support.

Where Are You Spring??

Well I am convinced that this is the year of pain.  My good friend Edna has been battling pain and finding it difficult to get around.  My daughter was in an auto accident and ended up with a damaged car and more pain to go along with her sore back from a few weeks back.  Then of course my fall which is still causing me trouble plus Jay’s tripping over the oxygen hose and causing a bad nose bleed .  When will it end?

I finished Dave Barry’s Insane City last night which I enjoyed tremendously and I now face selecting the next novel from the bedroom shelf.  The house is cold and I spend a lot of time hunched over trying to stay warm which is not helping the back pain.

What a difference—-

–a day makes!

24 little hours

Today the sun shines brightly on 12 degrees and It looks like I will get the C in peace on the lap robe done.  I started it yesterday but a cramp in my left hand ended my progress abruptly.

I’m going to start calling this place the NERF house!  It seems that not only I manage to fall and hurt myself.but Jay tripped over his oxygen hose and hit his nose on the floor yesterday. with resulting blood shed.   2013 does not like us!  I’m still waking up with pain in my back, trouble breathing some times, and basically not quite as bad as last week but still restricting my movements.  Jay , how ever, is almost back to how he felt before the fall–thank goodness.

Molly And Brandy

Well my Fluffies found a warm spot  on the living room floor and are comfy for a while–hope you are comfy too!

You See It Don’t You?

Let’s Pretend This Never Happened  written by Jenny Lawson  is on it’s way upstairs until daughter Cindy comes to visit –then it will go home with her to read.  Lawson has this humorous way about her that really stretches your imagination.  Also the ability to create words  that look right even if they aren’t.

This evening I will start my Valentines Day present from my hubby.  It Is Dave Barry’s Insane City.  This promises to add a tickle to the funny bone.

Today I managed to change the linens on the bed  (should have been done Sunday). i cleaned the cat box and the bird cages (also a Sunday chore). This evening the area under my shoulder blades is protesting loudly.  Even the nap and pain pill didn’t correct that situation.  But I keep repeating to myself that this too shall pass ( when I have no idea but soon I hope.)

I wasted all that beautiful sunshine this afternoon because I needed to  try to relieve the pain that kept reminding me that you walk –don’t fall backwards down the stairs.  Still only two letters done on the lap robe!!

Now please take a moment to imagine a big, sparkling, red, heart in the middle of the screen!! Don’t see it then try harder!!  There you go –this is my love yah wish for you on this Valentines day!!!

DIdn’t Break Nothing!!!!

Wet and cold is all I can say about the outside.

spacer

What once was snow is now ice.

Is it ugly –yes.  Is it dangerous–Definitely!!! But after just falling inside I am extra careful outside.  I saw the doctor yesterday and it was x-rays of my back and chest plus an EKG.  Nothing is broken but there quite a bit of pain from the strain.  I am on a muscle relaxing medication which is helping me cope with the situation.  I have a lovely bruise where my chin hit my chest but the the pain is lessening and my tongue seems to have healed some.  I’m able to do some minimal chores and hopefully will be changing bed sheets and cleaning bird cages that are now over due.  The most pain seems to be across the shoulder blade area and it still bothers me some times when I breathe.

My lap robe has been abandoned temporarily but I did manage one more letter before I fell.

spacer

It is going to be quite a project when it is done.

Can’t wait to get back to it.

Take care –be careful–and keep in touch!!!
