An influential film executive, Marc Shmuger studied English and film studies at Wesleyan University and graduated in 1980, pursuing a career in the entertainment industry. With more than 30 years’ experience, Marc Shmuger has a reputation as a dynamic leader, with past roles including Executive Vice President of Marketing at Sony Pictures Entertainment. Most recently, Marc Shmuger completed an impressive term as Chairman of Universal Pictures. Appointed to the position of President of Marketing at Universal Pictures in 1998, Marc Shmuger advanced to the role of Vice Chairman within two years. In this role, he oversaw marketing, distribution, market research, media relations and corporate partnerships, and during his tenure Universal Pictures broke a number of records and released some of the decade’s largest film successes, including American Pie, Bridget Jones’ Diary, The Fast and The Furious, Meet The Parents, and Erin Brockovich. Marc Shmuger became Chairman of Universal Pictures in 2006. In this role, he built upon and surpassed his previous achievements at Universal, including delivering back to back years of record breaking box-office and profitability. He also continued to expand the reach of Universal Pictures, organizing the launch of Universal Pictures International (UPI), a wholly owned distribution company that resulted in unprecedented success for Universal Pictures outside the domestic market. Marc Shmuger is a multi-faceted leader, whose success continually garners accolades. He has been the recipient of numerous prestigious awards, including the 2009 Will Rogers Motion Pictures Pioneers Foundation Pioneer of the Year, as well as Advertising Age’s Entertainment Marketer of the Year in both 1999 and 2000. Marc Shmuger is also a committed philanthropist who contributes to a number of charities. Many organizations supported by Marc Shmuger are aimed toward helping youth, among them Generation Rwanda, A Place Called Home, The Fulfillment Fund, and the Alliance for Children’s Rights. He also supports Santa Monica Youth Football and Hoops 4 Hope.
