Performing Arts: Theatre

Golden Boy

Today @ The Belasco Theatre

From the snappy opening scene to the somber closing one, Clifford Odets' Golden Boy is naggingly familiar. Why? Since Golden Boy was first performed in 1937, its characters have become archetypes of American drama, and the plot has been reworked in countless other plays and movies. This classic rags-to-riches tale chronicles a talented young man as he struggles to choose between two careers at opposite ends of the spectrum: concert violin and professional boxing. Superbly directed by Bartlett Scher, who has overseen many of Lincoln Center Theater's outstanding revivals in recent years, and performed by a cast that must be the envy of other shows on Broadway, Golden Boy is a good, old-fashioned drama done right.

Art: Painting & Drawing

The Scream

Today @ MoMA The Museum of Modern Art

As much as we'd all like to be gazillionare art collectors, the reality is, for most of us, Sotheby's is just a name hanging off of drool-worthy West Village townhouses. Lucky for art lovers of the 99%, one of the four versions of Edvard Munch's The Scream — the most expensive painting, at $120 mill, to ever be sold for public auction — graces New York with its presence for a seven-month stint at the MoMA. Kleptos beware: a target of two previous high-profile thefts, Munch's sunset-y hughes are sure to be matched by the security advisory on the classic Expressionist painting.

The Big Terrific

Today @ Cameo Gallery

If the giggles elicited by clowning around with your friends aren't evidence enough, Big Terrific proves that hearty laughs can be had outside of comedy clubs. The free showcase brings together on-the-rise funnyfolk for a blend of interactive tomfoolery and experimental jibber jabber, with the occasional multimedia goof thrown in for good measure. Comedian-hosts Max Silvestri, Gabe Liedman, and Jenny Slate bring the sass and round up consistently satisfying squads of contributors. And surprise guests abound: recently, heavyweights Janeane Garofalo and Fred Armisen turned up for the party.

Books

100th anniversary of Marcel Proust's "Swann's Way"

Today @ The Morgan Library

Published in 1913, Marcel Proust's "In Search of Lost Time" is one of the great literary works of all time. The seven volume novel is considered one of the reading experiences that any lover of literature must have in their lifetime.  Considering it's around 3200 pages, the book might actually take a lifetime to get through. To celebrate its centennial, The Morgan is showcasing several of the author's notebooks, preliminary drafts, galley-proofs, and other documents from the collection of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. So grab your tea and madeleines, and get ready for some Proust!
