Membership
CalUWild has just one membership requirement: each member agrees to take one action a month to help protect our wilderness — a letter to the editor or a member of Congress, or a comment on a management plan prepared by an agency. However, dues are necessary to support CalUWild‘s work. They are voluntary but much appreciated, and contribution levels are listed below. Please contribute if you can.
CalUWild collaborates with local, state, regional, and national conservation groups and collects information from the press and other sources. We then distill it into a useful form and distribute it to our members via e-mail for speed and cost-effectiveness. We also provide information on the most persuasive means of communication. We try not to overwhelm our members with information, so we keep our correspondence to a minimum—our Update is usually sent out monthly (though occasionally extra alerts are necessary).
CalUWild has developed a network of citizens across the state poised to take effective action whenever it is needed. Our strategy has proven so successful that groups based on our model have sprung up in 19 other states.
In order to become even more effective, we need to increase our membership. Therefore, we ask our members to spread the word about the organization and help recruit new members as well. We also have a wilderness slideshow that we are happy to present to organizations. Please contact Mike Painter in San Francisco (information below) to arrange a showing.
The Utah Wilderness Bill, America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act, has long been one of our major legislative focuses. In the 112th Congress, it has been introduced in the House by Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), bill number H.R. 1916. Sen Dick Durbin (D-IL) has introduced it in the Senate (S. 979). Click here for a list of cosponsors and communications targets regarding this bill.

Dues help offset some of CalUWild’s lobbying and other expenses. Dues are not tax-deductible, and checks should be made payable to CalUWild.
