Mentoring Guidelines
The purpose of mentoring is to create a flexible and dynamic framework that defines and supports the relationship of the Mentor and their Protégé.
Duration
Initial commitment of six months. Relationships may be extended and terminated at any time with cause; participants are strongly encouraged to make every effort to have a successful experience. If the relationship is severed for reasons of incompatibility or scheduling difficulties, participants may request reassignment or removal from the active list.
Assignments
Mentors will be matched to prospective Protégés based on compatibility, as determined by questionnaire answers.
Support and Networking
A peer group/committee will be available to assist and provide initial support to program participants. Social functions to promote the program and provide networking opportunities will be scheduled.
Structure
Program structure should remain flexible to accommodate the diverse needs of the participants. A student Protégé may need/require a more defined structure with clear and measurable goals. Someone considering a career change may want very specific information. In some cases, just having a Mentor available as a resource may be sufficient.
When the Mentor and Protégé are introduced, they may define the nature of their relationship. Remember, this “experience,” should be enriching for both participants. Keep things simple and comfortable.
Feedback/Evaluation
Mentors are requested, within the first month of their assignment, to submit an informal overview/plan outlining activities and the general nature of their Mentor/Protégé relationship. This plan will be used to document our program and the processes applied. Information will be collected and maintained to enhance our ability to provide the best mentoring experiences and provide mentors and other STC chapters with useful information. Mentors and Protégés will be requested to submit evaluations of their experience after six months.
