I am an award-winning journalist, programmer, internationally-exhibited photographer, and writer in New York City.
I’m currently the Head of Data for Skift, a travel news and information company. My past jobs include News Application Developer at the investigative newsroom ProPublica and a reporter and newsroom programmer at the Sacramento Bee.
My passion is information and how it can be expressed through code, visualization, and writing. I’m also passionate about teaching it; I’ve self-published three online books to help people learn the relevant skills: The Bastards Book of Ruby, Photography, and Regular Expressions (an explanation for the “Bastards” moniker is here).
I occasionally blog. You can also follow me on Twitter: @dancow.
