7. This Week in Type #4 

   This week was… sweet. Yes, that’s the word. With all these articles about chocolate and typography, we just couldn’t keep our hand off the sugary treats. Among other things we took a crash course in anatomy (of web typography!), wallowed in tutorials, fell in love with a typo-classy-workspace, played with word animals and so on. But enough about the joys of typo desserts, let’s just dig in!

9. Is digital painting a form of art?

   

   Before we get the answer to that question, we should ask ourselves this: “What is art?” According to Google, art is the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture. I would gladly add that this expression of skill and imagination has a large impact on us, humans. A piece of art can create chemical reactions in our bodies that will pave the path to feelings and emotions unknown to us, emotions that we normally keep under control. A piece o art can make a grown man shed a tear, can restore positive thinking to a woman who just lost her child, can give hope and strength. So, what is art? For me, art is anything that touches my soul and make me transcend to a new level of conscious.

   If you accept these words as the correct definition for art, you need to read them again now! There is nothing there about the technique or technology used to create a piece of art or about how many piece of art alike are out there in the world.

   Is digital painting a form of art?

   Critics and traditionalists will argue that digital painting does not provide an unique artwork and that the way it is created is far away from traditional painting. But as I said, art is not about the technology used to create something but rather about the final product and its impact on human mind. Looking at this collection of 10 Astonishing Digital Paintings, I can only certify that digital painting is truly a form of art, and future generations will acknowledge it as something to be taken into consideration more seriously.
