Do you have heroes?
I do.
All these years later, I am still in awe. In awe of a child that has survived her parent’s divorce. A child that has spend the last four years of her life thinking about if this was a mom week or a dad week. A child that opened her heart to a step father and a new life.
A child that loves to create and fix anything that is broken. A child who happily spends an afternoon working on a boat, cleaning, fixing, and just “being.”
A child that loves to get out her apron and cook. A child who learned to play chess in one sitting and garden and adores playing board games.
A child who blends bits of various languages and cultures into everything she does. A child who plans out days of pampering, shopping, eating out, and adventures.
A child….one child….no longer an “it”. No longer a mysterious question mark. No longer an enigma.
My daughter. My daughter who after asking over and over again why all the adults in her life cannot live in one house, all together, understands that her parents are better friends apart than they were together. My daughter who, when I told her that I would be getting married, wanted to be her dad’s best friend so that he would not be lonely. My daughter who does not want to kiss her step dad because she is afraid of being disloyal, but who hugs and adores this new man in her life more than she can admit.
My daughter who organizes life and activities by parent: driving and parking with her dad; cooking, art, and playing games with her step dad; and learning to behave and going on adventures with her mom.
I could not be more proud.
