spacer spacer The primary mission of the Alaska RCC is to provide a 24-hour rescue coordination capability in support of US military and civil aviation search and rescue (SAR) needs in the Alaska search and rescue region (SRR). Additionally, the Alaska RCC may provide assistance in the prosecution of humanitarian SAR in Alaska, other countries, and to SAR agencies in other SRRs if it does not conflict with AKRCC's primary mission. Ultimately, the role of Alaska RCC in civil SAR is in direct support of the National SAR Plan, a cabinet-level federal plan. Representing Alaska's federal inland search and rescue coordinator, the Alaska Rescue Coordination Center serves as the single agency responsible for coordinating on-land and aviation federal SAR activities in the mainland of Alaska.

Located at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, the Alaska RCC operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The center directly ties in to the Federal Aviation Administration's alerting system and the U.S. Mission Control Center. In addition to the Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking information, the AKRCC computer system contains resource files that list federal, state and volunteer civilian organizations which can conduct or assist in SAR efforts throughout the state and neighboring regions.
