General Information
The PhD program arises from a merging betweeen the PhD program in Information Engineering and the forward PhD program in Mathematical Logic and Bioinformatics. Students may choose one research curriculum among

  • Automatic Control and Robotics (A. Garulli, D. Prattichizzo, A. Vicino)
  • Bioinformatics (M. Falaschi)
  • Complex Systems (P. Nistri, A. Vicino)
  • Computing Systems (M. Maggini)
  • Decision support methods for management (A. Agnetis)
  • Electromagnetics Engineering (S. Maci)
  • Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Electronic Measurements (A. Fort, M. Forti)
  • Mathematical Logic an Informatics (F. Montagna)
  • Telecommunications and Telematics Technologies (M. Barni)

The Ph.D. program is administrated by the Department of Information Engineering and Mathematical Sciences (DIISM).The members of the PhD Board belong in large part to DIISM. The duration of the course is three years. The formative program is driven by the need of provideing future researchers in both academic and industrial environments with the background and methodological skills required to deal with constant scientific and technological innovations.
This is made possible by the multidisciplinary nature of the DIISM which hosts a multiplicity of scientific skills, research activities, technological laboratories, experimental equipment, well suited for providing students with a stimulating research environment.
The PhD students fulfil their coursework and methodology requirements by attending a number of courses and by devoting an increasing across the three years amount of time to research. Every year the school organizes a number of intensive courses, ranging from advanced mathematics to engineering topics, held by renowned international and national experts.
The PhD degree is attained after defending the thesis in front of a committee.
Students enrolled in our PhD school can apply to stay at the Santa Chiara PhD College, offering comfortable accommodation.
The PhD program is frequented by a number of students that ranges from 55 to 65, with an average of 25% of students coming from abroad.
Every year there are from 14 to 20 new open positions, half of which funded either by the University or by private institutions and companies. The call is generally issued in May or June, and will remain open for 30 days. Applicants must already have the Master degree or get it within the end of September. PhD activities normally start on October, 1. For details, see the section on How to apply.
