Guzman was born and raised in the mean streets of Guachupita, Dominican Republic. He was introduced to the sport of boxing at the age of eight and from there he became not only the best amateur out of his country, but also the world. He built an outstanding record of 311 wins and only 10 losses. He captured 3 consecutive gold medals in the Central America Championships as well as gold in the Pan-American World Championship. He entered the 1996 Olympic Games as the number 1 ranked boxer in his weight division, but unfortunately lost to the future record setting champion Omar Andres Narvaez.
Guzman turned pro in the United States on September of 1997 at the age of 21 and captured the WBO super bantamweight title in his 18th pro bout. He defended the title successfully for 6 bouts before moving up to super featherweight. There he defeated Jorge Barrios for the super featherweight title. He went on to defend his title against Humberto Soto and Antonio Davis. Since then he has moved up to lightweight and his current division of light welterweight.
Guzman’s successful career has been overshadowed by weight issues. But, now with the elite training provided by acquinity those issues are in the past. He is right on track now to regaining a world title as a light welterweight. His flashy and one of a kind defensive style is an artistic display of talent that makes it obvious why he was among the top pound for pound fighters in the world and is still one of the most avoided boxers in the world.
