Four internationally renowned illustrators visited Falmouth last week to present at the annual Illustration Forum, at the Falmouth Campus. The event was chaired by leading comics and graphic novels critic and historian Dr. Roger Sabin. Each year a theme is chosen for the Forum which explores a different aspect of authorial illustration practice.
The Head of Design Lectures launched into its spring series with a talk in January by celebrated British designer Gareth Williams, Senior Tutor of Design Products at the Royal College of Art. This was followed by lectures from designer, researcher and performer Damon Taylor, who studied his PhD at Falmouth University, and Orsola De Castro, described by The Daily Telegraph's fashion pages as "the ethical fashion designer" and founder of the clothing company ‘From Somewhere,' which makes clothes out of recycled offcuts of luxury materials.
Alice Ellis-Bray and Gareth Wilde, both Level 1 Fine Art BA(Hons) students, won prizes at this year's British Art Medal Annual Student Project.
Ten Fine Art students took part in the Project. Alice Ellis-Bray winning Honorable Mention, sponsored by the Bigbury Mint for her ‘Untitled' piece along with Gareth Wilde winning The Herbie Prize for The Best Political medal for his entry ‘Cover-up'.
Falmouth launched into its spring series of Masters Art lectures with a talk by celebrated British sculptor Bill Woodrow on 16 January. This has been followed up by sell out lectures from noted artists Gavin Turk and Peter Fraser.
Patrick Lowry is an artist and lecturer based in Cornwall. His work is predominately installation-based and explores the human relationship to places and environments within social and political contexts. This talk has been arranged to coincide with a forthcoming solo show American Dream at The Exchange, Penzance (27 April - 6 July) for which he will be constructing a full-sized replica of the faade and garden of a 1950s American suburban home complete with a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air.
The Academy of Innovation & Research (AIR) is hosting a week of events and activities on climate change, which are designed to enable exchange of cutting-edge research across disciplines and build networks across institutions, businesses and communities. The week includes presentations, performances, workshops and networking opportunities.
The week is free to participants from Cornwall.
Cornelia Parker studied at Gloucestershire College of Art and Design, Wolverhampton Polytechnic and at Reading University where she completed her MFA in 1982. She also has honorary Doctorates from the University of Wolverhampton and the University of Birmingham and the University of Gloucestershire.
Born in Leicestershire in 1963 Naomi Frears studied at Loughborough then Sunderland making bad sculpture and winning the printmaking prize. After riding her motorcycle across the world, she moved to St Ives in the late 80s to pursue her career as an artist focussing on printmaking and painting. One of Cornwall's leading artists, Frears was selected for Art Now Cornwall at Tate St Ives and her work has been regularly included in exhibitions at The Exchange and Newlyn Galleries.
