Course data download issues

Occasionally, files get corrupted during the download process. Delete the file that doesn't open, and download the data again. When downloading and extracting the data, check the path where you are saving the files and make sure that none of the folder names contain spaces or special characters.

'Not a valid win32 application'
This error usually means the file became corrupt during the download process. This commonly occurs when using a wireless internet connection. Delete the file that does not open, and download the data again. If this does not help, download the course data to a different computer with a non-wireless broadband internet connection and then transfer the data to your computer.

'Cannot find downloads2.esri.com'
This error is very common among organizations (especially government agencies) with strict firewall configurations. Your organization may be blocking certain downloads. Contact your network administrator to allow the download of the .exe file or download the data to a computer outside of your organization's firewall (such as your home pc) and then transfer the data to your work computer.

My course data will not open. What can I do?

Each course has data that needs to be downloaded and extracted. This can be done by clicking the "download the data now" link in the introductory paragraph of exercises that use data.

The .exe file will not open
Occasionally, files get corrupted during the download process. Delete the file that doesn't open, and download the data again. When downloading and extracting the data, check the path where you are saving the files. Make sure that none of the folder names contain spaces or special characters.

The .exe file cannot be downloaded or is blocked

  • Your organization may be blocking certain downloads. Contact your network administrator to make sure you are allowed to download .exe files.
  • If you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed, the file will probably be blocked. In this case, after accepting the disclaimer, you should see a note that the file was blocked in the information bar (near the address bar). Click the information bar and choose Download File. If the download does not start automatically, go back and download it again.
  • Make sure that downloads are enabled in your browser.

Geoprocessing error: 'Failed to execute'

Geoprocessing tools can fail to run if the folder names in the path where you save your data contain spaces or special characters. For example, you should not save the data to your "My Documents" folder because of the space in the name. If you saved your data to a folder with spaces or special characters, rename it or unzip the data to a new location. It's best to save the files to your C:\Temp or C:\Student folder.
