USF to host an evening with Rory Kennedy
[10.22.2012]

TAMPA, Fla. -– Rory Kennedy, daughter of the late Robert F. Kennedy and Emmy-winning independent documentary filmmaker, is coming to Tampa to talk about her newest film, “Ethel,” which offers a personal look inside the life and political dynasty of the Kennedy family.

She will be presenting her film “Ethel” to the Tampa community, followed by a brief Q & A with the filmmaker, on Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Tampa Theater in downtown Tampa. The event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited to about 1,300 people.

Rory Kennedy’s 30-something films cover a range of issues from poverty and politics to human rights. Her work has been shown on HBO, A&E, MTV, Lifetime and PBS.

The newest documentary about her mother focuses on the remarkable life of Ethel, the politically active wife of RFK, and the single mother who raised Rory and her 10 older siblings.

Intertwining famous footage of world events, such as the Civil Rights movement, the Vietnam war and the anti-war movement, and assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, with the Kennedy’s rare home movies and personal photos, the film follows Ethel from birth to her marriage to husband Robert, to her political awakening, to Ethel in present day. The documentary provides a personal portrait of the Kennedy matriarch through interviews and personal accounts from Ethel’s close friends and family.

“Ethel,” the HBO Documentary Films Feature premiered at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival and won the Audience Award for Best Documentary.

This event is part of the Frontier Forum lecture series, presented by the USF Phi Beta Kappa Alumni Faculty and sponsored by the USF Office of the Provost, USF College of Arts and Sciences and Mayor Bob Buckhorn.
