Ride on the Minecraft Beetlejuice roller coaster!

by Owen on March 22, 2013

Do you remember Beetlejuice? The surreal 1988 Tim Burton movie with an abundance of black and white stripes? It’s the inspiration behind this trippy Minecraft roller coaster, and one of our favourite creations to come out of XBOX 360 edition so far. It’s also maximum wub wub.

Stellar work RivergrlI21 and Nuropsych1!

What is Minecraft Realms anyway?

by Daniel Kaplan on March 20, 2013

spacer
Hey hey!
We’ve received a bunch of questions about Minecraft Realms. Here’s an attempt to answer most of them :)

A select group of players now have access to the Minecraft Realms limited alpha test. Minecraft Realms is a service designed to let players play on a server together with minimal setup, and will be available to the public later this year.

Will this change the way I play Minecraft?
Nothing will change regarding how you create, setup, or host servers today. Minecraft Realms is an additional service of hosting servers for those who want it. Nothing is mandatory.

How can I get into the Realms closed Alpha?
You can’t yet sorry. It’s a private, invite-only thing. Keep an eye on this blog for more info!

How much does it cost?
We’re not sure yet. It will be a subscription service. One subscription = one server. Only the host needs to pay. The host can invite (whitelist) friends to play on his/her server.

How many players can play together?
This is not confirmed yet. During the closed alpha we have set a limit of ten players to test out our systems.

What is Minecraft Pocket Realms?
It is the mobile version of our Realms service.

How much will Pocket Realms cost?
We’re not sure yet. It will be a subscription service. One subscription = one server. Only the host needs to pay. The host can invite (whitelist) friends to play on his/her server.

How do I buy a Pocket Realms subscription?
Realms subscriptions will be available via an in-app purchase within Minecraft – Pocket Edition. You’ll need to log in with your Mojang Account to use the service. If you don’t have an account you’ll be asked to create one.

This is all the info we have right now. We’ll keep you updated as things develop!

Have a nice day!
/Daniel @kappische

Minecraft 1.5.1 Pre-release

by Jens Bergensten on March 19, 2013

Hey hey!

We finally managed to locate and fix the reported performance issues of 1.5, so now it should be at least similar to the performance of 1.4.7. We also fixed a number of bugs (as seen in the snapshot release last week), and a couple more. The 1.5.1 patch notes are a bit simplified, though…

  • Fixed a bunch of bugs
  • Improved performance
  • Notable: Falling blocks no longer glitch one step
  • Notable: White stitching between blocks should be less frequent
  • Notable: Crash on Mac OS X on “OpenGL Function Not Supported”
  • Notable: Unable to place paintings

We intend to publish the release on Thursday, unless something nasty happens, or Searge of MCP asks us to wait for them to catch up.

Get the snapshot here:

  • Client: assets.minecraft.net/1_5_1/minecraft.jar
  • Server: assets.minecraft.net/1_5_1/minecraft_server.jar (or EXE)

Report bugs here (but please use the search function before you post duplicates!):

  • Minecraft issue tracker!

EDIT: The minecraft.jar file has been re-uploaded to fix a null pointer crash. If you downloaded it yesterday (Tuesday), please get it again.

Watch Minecraft develop over 800 days. It’s pretty

by Owen on March 14, 2013

Who’d have thought the development of Minecraft could make such a colourful, lively worm-thing? Nathan, that’s who. He used a tweaked version of Gource, along with the Minecraft changelog, to create the video above. Watch full screen for maximum enlightenment. The music comes courtesy of C418‘s in-game discs.

As the team beavers away, the code-beast thrives. Different colours represent different types of files: blue strands are text, red are sounds, grey is java. Things get really interesting when you start looking at specific dates in the evolution of Minecraft. Watch Jens’ get busy when he takes over as lead developer, the codespolsion when the team refactors things for the first time, or the zapping of duplicate files in April 2012.

Very relaxing and oddly satisfying. Enjoy!

Thanks to you, Mojam 2013 raised $517,489

by Owen on March 13, 2013

A few weeks ago, Mojam 2013 happened; Mojang and a few other indie devs worked on new projects over three days. We live-streamed the whole thing, then shaved off Notch’s beard.

Why did we do this? It was a lot of fun, but it also gave you opportunity to donate towardsBlock by Block and the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Everyone who donated got to download the completed creations and play till their heart’s content.

The response was overwhelming. Here’s a breakdown of the cash raised.

  • Mojam 2013 raised a total of $517,489.25.
  • 86,531 of you handed over cash.
  • The median amount donated was $2.00. The average was $5.98.
  • After payment processor fees $295,553.96 was raised for The Electronic Frontier Foundation and $194,493.28 for Block By Block.

Massive thanks to all who donated – you’re probably a lovely person.

Have a nice day!

Hey!

The Redstone Update is finally out! Get it via the launcher. The changelog was posted in the previous post, so here you have a couple of videos of it instead:

First, the Minecraft 1.5 Song by YourMCAdmin

If that’s a bit too short for you, this one by nativisions is a little bit more in depth (5:38)

And if you want an even longer, here’s one by icecreamstatus (15:06),

We got these YouTube links by the help of the Minecraft Reddit Community, you can see the whole thread here: www.reddit.com/r/Minecraft/comments/19ujql/video_summaries_of_15/

Have fun!

// The Minecraft and Minecraft Realms teams

PS. We know the readers of this blog are a little bit more hardcore about Minecraft than most, so we should tell you that a 1.5.1 already is on its way. We plan to snapshot this tomorrow, and hopefully get it out as soon as possible.

Minecraft Snapshot 13w10b

by Jens Bergensten on March 6, 2013

Ok! Final snapshot! Honest!* Tomorrow: Pre-release!

The things changed in this snapshot are:

  • Notable change: Dispensers and droppers will now only fire once when they receive a redstone signal. To fire again, the signal must be turned off and on again. (Previously a dispenser would fire whenever it had a signal and a nearby block changed.)
  • [MC-711] Redstone and components stay powered after unloading chunks
  • [MC-846] Dispenser and Dropper shooting out when updated
  • [MC-3458] Server crashes if spaces are input on the console
  • [MC-6223] Night Vision Potions that are edited to last longer create a potentially seizure-inducing flashing sky background.
  • [MC-8022] Furnace interface occasionally closes when adding fuel, deleting all items in the furnace
  • [MC-8597] Named Mobs Don't have Named Babies
  • [MC-10357] Getting into a minecart with a mob in it crashes minecraft
  • [MC-10946] 2 Hoppers funneling unstackable items into a 3rd Hopper at the same time cause the 3rd Hopper to not funnel items into a container
  • [MC-10948] Dispensers continually shoot/use certain items like water buckets and flint&steel
  • [MC-10950] Comparators still giving off power when hopper inventory is empty
  • [MC-10956] Animals can breed over distances up to almost 8 blocks when only seperated by fences
  • [MC-10995] Message "THIS TOO" in console
  • [MC-11019] Full hoppers feeding into full hoppers causes the forward hopper to stall
  • [MC-11044] Adding items to brewing stand using dropper does not change state of comparator

Get the snapshot here:

  • Client: assets.minecraft.net/13w10b/minecraft.jar
  • Server: assets.minecraft.net/13w10b/minecraft_server.jar (or EXE)
