Question: Is the world round or flat?
Answer: Flat

A: You would find water.

A: The sun is moving around the earth.
Q: Can you draw a picture of Africa and show me where Malawi is?
A: (much pondering, holding pencil and paper) No, I don’t know.

These were the answers given by a village farmer who works for me at Linthipe. Resourceful, intelligent, hard-working, eager to learn new things — but with minimal primary school education, he lacks basic knowledge about the world.

But he doesn’t really need that knowledge to survive, right?
