Education Foundation

Established in 1991, The Daily Californian Education Foundation supports student journalism and newspaper management training at the University of California, Berkeley. No journalism major is offered to undergraduates at UC Berkeley, leaving The Daily Californian to fill the training void.

Because The Daily Cal is one of only a handful of student-run newspapers to operate independently of the university that it covers, the nonprofit corporation that publishes the paper is funded entirely by advertising revenues generated by a student sales staff and contributions from alumni and community members. Historically, the Education Foundation’s support of the Daily Cal has included scholarships, funding for training opportunities, and assistance with major capital upgrades, such as computers for the newsroom and photo equipment.

As advertising revenue has declined with the economy, the role of the Education Foundation has expanded. Advertising revenue alone cannot meet the needs of educating the—on average—150 students each year at the Daily Cal.

The Daily Californian is the only student-run paper in the nation to have a nonprofit foundation supporting its training mission. The Daily Californian Education Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization completely independent of the University of California. All contributions to the foundation are tax-deductible.
