October 3, 2011

Dear Subscribers and Contributors,

2011 has been another year of difficult fiscal circumstances at our university and in the state of Illinois. The editors of Crab Orchard Review were not certain until June that we would be given approval to print either Volume 16, Number 1, or Volume 16, Number 2, our special issue "New & Old ~ Re-Visions of The American South." These circumstances required us to put a hold on once again all significant expenditures. We apologize for the uncertainty and inconvenience this caused our subscribers and contributors.

We are very happy to report that we have been able to get both of these issues out to all subscribers --Vol. 16, No. 1, which features the 2011 winners of our COR Literary Prizes (Erika Reich Giles, Greta Schuler, and Catherine Anderson) and the 2010 winner of the Charles Johnson Student Fiction Award (Rachel Furey); and Volume 16, Number 2, our special issue "New & Old ~ Re-Visions of The American South."

Our deepest gratitude goes to our contributors and subscribers, whose patience and understanding has been so much help during these difficult times.

We are working at completing the final editorial work on Volume 17, Number 1, and are cautiosly optimistic about a more stable fiscal environment to get our publication schedule the rest of the way back on track.

The call for submissions for our next special issue is linked below. The short version is that the topic is "Due North." And the submission period (postmarked) is through November 5, 2011.

Our next book competition in the Crab Orchard Series in Poetry will be the 2012 Open Competition Awards and the postmark submission period for that opened on October 1 and runs through November 16, 2011. The final judge will be Cynthia Huntington.

Our sincerest apologies for the inconvenience and confusion caused by this delay in mailing.
