Mountainview College has two learning communities (LC), the Engineering Community and the Nursing Community. Residents of the Engineering Community, the oldest of Mountainview's LCs, will reside in either Cascade or Marcy Halls. While, residents of the Nursing Community, which begins Fall 2012, will reside in Hunter Hall. You can find more information on each community listed below.
School of Nursing Learning Community: Offered for incoming freshman entering the School of Nursing. Students live close to one another in one Mountainview hall. Members of the Nursing Learning Community (NLC) take a required freshman course together in the Appalachian Center located in Mountainview. A variety of activities is designed specifically for freshman are offered throughout the year. The Engineering Learning Community (ELC) at Mountainview College provides an excellent opportunity for incoming freshmen to meet other engineering students and to receive the academic support they need to succeed. Students who participate in the ELC adjust better to academic life and make a deeper connection with the campus community.
Students who are part of the Engineering Community have access to many benefits:
Will my son or daughter be isolated from other students?
The Engineering Learning Community is designed to foster a sense of community and a shared purpose with other students and their teachers. Students will have more opportunities to interact with a range of people. While their roommate will most likely be a part of the ELC, the floor on which they will live will be a combination of students from other majors as well.
Will he or she earn extra credit by living in the Engineering Community?
No, but the opportunity to attend small classes and receive personal attention is a great benefit. The ELC classes will fulfill General Education requirements. There are also opportunities to work on innovative and unique projects designed especially for ELC students.
Is it a full-year obligation?
Residential Life assignments are made for one year; however, participation in the Engineering Learning Community lasts only in the fall semester of the freshman year.
Once registered, is it possible to change the schedule?
ELC participants cannot change their WTSN 111/103 or their MATH 221 sections. Any general education elective changes must be built around the ELC WTSN and MATH registrations.
Enrollment in the Engineering Learning Community is on a first come, first served basis. The only way to get onto to the list is through the Student Housing Sign-up System.
In order to get into the Housing Sign-up System, a new student must:
Once you have entered the sign-up system, you must select the general learning community page and on that page, select the Engineering Learning Community!
From this effort, the Housing System will generate a list of students interested in the ELC by date and time in which they signed up. This list is then used to select students for the ELC and a confirmation email is sent to the selected students at their BU email address.
Please be sure you are planning on an engineering major when you select the ELC.
