Titan has stated that they will withdraw up to 16 million gallons of water daily from our aquifers. The NC Division of Water Quality reports that pumping groundwater can accelerate the formation of sinkholes, which have appeared near Titan's property in New Hanover County during heavy withdrawals from the underlying groundwater.  Learn more about local sinkhole formation here. Get the Facts: Health Impacts

of Cement Kiln Pollution

Titan's plant would have wide-ranging effects on public health in our area, especially on at-risk populations such as children, the elderly, and those with existing conditions.  A wealth of medical literature is increasingly associating exposure to pollutants such as fine particulates and ozone with the rise in children diagnosed asthma, autism spectrum disorder, and other conditions.  However, Titan's air permit allows them to be significant emitters of a suite of other pollutants, including toxic chemicals such as mercury, benzene, and lead.  Check out the documents below to learn more:

  • Health Effects of Toxic Emissions from Cement Plants
  • Health Effects of Cement Kiln Pollution on Cardiovascular Disease
  • Impacts of Titan's Cement Plant on Asthma & Other Respiratory Illnesses
  • Criteria Pollutants Chart for Titan's Permitted Air Emissions (Updated March 2013)
  • Hazardous/Toxic Pollutants Chart for Titan's Permitted Air Emissions (Updated March 2013)
Be sure to check out our resources page for more information, including details on the expected economic impacts of Titan's proposed facility.
