Mahmoud Abbas |
Mahmoud Abbas (Abu Mazen) is the Chairman of the Palestinian Authority. Abbas worked very closely with Arafat during the years Arafat ruled the PA. Abbas was appointed by Arafat as Prime Minister in 2003, and was elected as Chairman of the PA in January 2005. This section documents statements made by Abbas.
In 2006, official PA radio and television stations were placed under the control of Abbas’s office [Ma’an News, Feb. 17, 2006]. Therefore, in addition to Abbas's own statements, it is important to examine the broadcasts and publications of official PA media which are documented on PMW's website. They are a reflection of the ideologies and messages that Abbas and other PA leaders and officials choose to disseminate to their people. |

PA TV broadcasts 19 times in 3 days Abbas' implicit call for violence in Jerusalem
|
Source:
Official Palestinian Authority TV, Oct. 19, 2014
|
PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas: “It's not enough for us to say: ‘There are those carrying out Ribat’ (religious conflict / war over land claimed to be Islamic). We must all carry out Ribat in the Al-Aqsa [Mosque]. It's not enough for us to say: ‘The settlers have arrived [at the Mosque]’. They have come, and they must not come to the Sanctuary (i.e., Temple Mount). We have to prevent them, in any way whatsoever, from entering the Sanctuary. This is our Sanctuary, our Al-Aqsa and our Church [of the Holy Sepulchre]. They have no right to enter it. They have no right to defile it. We must prevent them. Let us stand before them with chests bared to protect our holy places.”

Abbas quotes Quranic verse encouraging violent resistance in speech
|
Source:
Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Sept. 28, 2014
|
“[PA] President Mahmoud Abbas has addressed our people several times since the start of the aggression against the Gaza Strip (i.e., 2014 Gaza war). Each time, he added something new to the chain of events and their rapid development in a way that served the Palestinian cause – in particular, the Gaza Strip, which sacrificed Martyrs (Shahids) on a daily basis. In his speech two days ago [Aug. 26, 2014], the President announced the end of the aggression against the Gaza Strip based on the Egyptian initiative, to which he has supported all along. Last month, he said other things suggesting that he opposes the occupation and supports the resistance of our people. Many considered the fact that he concluded his speech with the Quranic verse, ‘Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory.’ (Sura 22:39, trans. Sahih International) as a clear and open [show of] support for the resistance, and a call to [manifest] anger against the occupation. This was realized on the ground in the West Bank, which answered the President’s call and set out to confront the occupation.”

Abbas "gave the sign to let the [Palestinian] street in the West Bank loose"
|
Source:
Ma’an, independent Palestinian news agency, July 25, 2014
|
Op-ed by Muhannad Ubeid
Headline: "A single Quranic verse ignited the West Bank"
"[Mahmoud] Abbas realized that by staying outside the arena, he would be excluded from the political game. He also knows that the [Palestinian] street in the West Bank is ready for an explosion. Therefore, he gave the sign to let the [Palestinian] street in the West Bank loose. Isn't the Quranic verse he quoted during his last speech, "Permission [to fight] has been given to those who are being fought, because they were wronged. And indeed, Allah is competent to give them victory" [Sura 22:39, trans. Sahih International] a clear sign to loosen the reins on the street?
Furthermore, what is the meaning of Fatah Central Committee member Tawfiq Tirawi's statement regarding the West Bank's need to enter into an armed Intifada? It's been a long time since we heard a member of the Fatah leadership talk about weapons. The West Bank's entrance into the line of confrontation will reshuffle the cards, and the action is still just beginning. Israel will not agree to a third Intifada, and this is precisely what Abbas wants. He wants Israel to knock on his door in order to find a solution."
