H.323 Forum Announces First Equipment Certification Event, June 2 - 6, 2003

"One of the first H.323 Forum goals was to develop an industry-wide H.323 equipment certification program. After much hard work by Anatoli Levine and his team, I am very pleased to announce the first H.323 Forum equipment certification event. The event will be held 6/2-6/6 in Billerica, Massachusetts to synchronize with the Spring IMTC interop event. At this event, H.323 Forum and IMTC member companies will have a chance to test their equipment against standardized H.323 Forum protocol certification testcases. If successful, member companies will receive official H.323 Forum certification status, receive an official certificate as well as permission to use a special H.323 Forum certification logo. This is an important H.323 industry event and I invite all member companies to attend. I also ask that companies planning to purchase H.323 equipment begin requesting H.323 Forum certification. With a little help from everyone, we can turn this program into the industry standard and improve H.323 interoperability throughout the network.

Link to the certification event registration page is as follows: www.imtc.org/interops/index.asp

Again, thanks to the H.323 Forum certification team for a job well done!

Regards,
Larry Schessel"

DRM/NMI Workshop Planning Underway

Grace Agnew and Mairead Martin of the ViDe Digital Rights Management working group have just received an award from the NSF NMI program to conduct an invitational workshop - "The NMI and DRM". The workshop is also being endorsed by CNI, EDUCAUSE, I2, SURA, and ViDe, and will be held mid-August in Washington, DC. The workshop will focus on exploring how the work of the NMI might be leveraged towards a DRM implementation for R&E, the idea of a rights metadata core and the launching of an initiative to pursue this, and the establishment of an NMI Digital Content Working Group.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.

NSF Middleware Initiative Release 1.0

NMI-R1 was released on May 7, 2002. It integrates key software packages, standards, and best practices toward formation of a national middleware infrastructure for science, engineering and education. Downloads are free to the public.

The National Science Foundation issued a press release describing NMI-R1, which features deliverables from the two NMI project teams: GRIDS and EDIT.

The NMI consists partially of video middleware (CommObject) that was

º Will the Bells crush Net calling? Telephone calls traveling over the Internet are surging in popularity. From virtually nothing a few years ago, Internet-based calling now comprises an estimated 10 percent of international calls. While domestic numbers vary between 1 percent and 5 percent, there is broad agreement that Internet calling is quickly growing.

º Web Consortium Captures Captioning The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has commissioned a working group to develop standards for text captioning of streaming video. The Timed Text Working Group will base the standards on XML and hopes to further bridge the gap for disabled individuals seeking to use the multimedia features of the Web. "This is not just for the slacker in the office, but for people with disabilities to capture the information in the audio stream," said W3C representative Janet Daly.

º Apple Strikes Major Blow in Streaming Media Market; Lands QuickTime Deal with Japan's DoCoMo Japan's leading cell phone carrier NTT DoCoMo, generally recognized as the most technologically innovative of all the world's wireless telephone providers, has picked Apple's QuickTime 6 to be its audio and video platform for future mobile phones.

º From Chris Hodge: " We are looking at combining live 360 degree IP-streams, and Larry Rowe from UC Berkeley sent me this link from Penn's General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception Lab which some of you might also find interesting."

º From Bob Dixon: " California is changing from H.320 to H.323 and is using the Internet2 Commons and ViDe dialing scheme approaches."

º Videoconferencing Hole Exposed Several popular video-conferencing systems -- including the popular Polycom Viewstation -- are found to have a hole that could allow malicious hackers to snoop and distribute private broadcasts.

º Lawrence Lessig Over the past three years, Lessig has given more than 100 talks like the one captured here. On July 24, 2002, at the O.Reilly Open Source Conference he announced this would be one of his last.

º Middleware "What is middleware, anyway? A standing joke is that if you ask five people, you will get six definitions. Unfortunately, this is quite true..."

º Copywrong? We must be blunt about the current system's threats to free speech, intellectual freedom, and the free flow of information. We must be careful not to be trapped in nihilistic rhetoric about the "end of copyright." Copyright need not end if we can rehabilitate and rehumanize it. Our jobs depend on it.
