New Standard Makes Videoconferencing as Easy as E-mail

ITU Adopts H.350 Architecture Developed by Internet2 Working Group
WASHINGTON, D.C. - September 3, 2003

A new standard announced today by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) will make videoconferencing with colleagues, friends and relatives via the Internet easier and less expensive. Resulting from an Internet2(R) Middleware Initiative Video working group, the new H.350 standard provides a uniform way for storing and finding information related to video and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) in enterprise directories. {more}

MIC Cataloging Utility Now Available

"It is expected that, utilmately, several cataloging utilities, supporting different schemas but readily exportable to the MIC, will be made available. Currently, a cataloging utility that creates records in Dublin Core and MPEG-7 is being provided as a Microsoft Access 2000 database, available for download from this website (gondolin.rutgers.edu/MIC/text/how/cataloging_utility.htm). This utility will include XML record export in MPEG-7 or Dublin Core simple for export to the MIC union catalog."

H.323 Forum Announces First Equipment Certification Event, June 2 - 6, 2003

"One of the first H.323 Forum goals was to develop an industry-wide H.323 equipment certification program. After much hard work by Anatoli Levine and his team, I am very pleased to announce the first H.323 Forum equipment certification event. The event will be held 6/2-6/6 in Billerica, Massachusetts to synchronize with the Spring IMTC interop event. At this event, H.323 Forum and IMTC member companies will have a chance to test their equipment against standardized H.323 Forum protocol certification testcases. If successful, member companies will receive official H.323 Forum certification status, receive an official certificate as well as permission to use a special H.323 Forum certification logo. This is an important H.323 industry event and I invite all member companies to attend. I also ask that companies planning to purchase H.323 equipment begin requesting H.323 Forum certification. With a little help from everyone, we can turn this program into the industry standard and improve H.323 interoperability throughout the network.

Megaconference IV Viewing Instructions

You are invited to view the upcoming Megaconference IV event via streaming video available from several locations. There are now over 200 organizations around the world registered to participate interactively via H.323. Many presentations related to distance learning will occur throughout the day as well as other events, and it will be educational and entertaining for all. The date is December 10, and will run from 8am to 8pm EST (UTC-5). There will be three sessions during the day, to provide convenient times for participants in all parts of the world. The three sessions will not be repetitive.

The NSF Middleware Initiative (NMI) and Digital Rights Management (DRM) Workshop, headed up by ViDe's Mairead Martin (University of Tennessee at Knoxville) and Grace Agnew (Rutgers University), is past, but the website contains a nice set of resources as well as the program materials (PowerPoint and .pdf files) -- well worth taking a look at with interest in DRM. ViDe presentations at Educause 2002

The Educause 2002 meeting has come and gone, and the members of ViDe continued to spread the word. Bob Dixon, Jill Gemmill, Mary Trauner, and Doug Pearson conducted a seminar, "How Do I Do Internet Videoconferencing on My Campus? A ViDe Workshop Focusing on Resources/Best Practices for Providing H.323 Services" [more information available here], and Jill and Mary presented a talk on "The Video Development Initiative" as part of the External Relationships and New Partnerships track [more here].

Wire One's Glowpoint Network Co-Hosts The First-Ever IP-Carried Video Conference For The H.323 Forum In Conjunction With IMTC's SuperOP! 2002

Wire One Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: WONE), a provider of video communications solutions, today announced that its award-winning Glowpoint network, in conjunction with the Video Development Initiative (ViDe) and the Internet2 network, successfully co-hosted a 1.5-hour, 93-endpoint video conference for the H.323 Forum. The video conference was held in connection with SuperOP!, the International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium's (IMTC) annual testing event for the interoperability of rich media products based on open standards. Federated Digital Rights Management: A Proposed DRM Solution for Research and Education

D-Lib magazine online has published an article co-authored by Mairead Martin, MPEG-4 Chair, and Grace Agnew, Video Access Chair, titled "Federated Digital Rights Management: A Proposed DRM Solution for Research and Education." From the article:

This article describes efforts underway within the research networking and library communities to develop a digital rights management (DRM) solution to support teaching and research. Our specific focus is to present a reference architecture for a federated DRM implementation that leverages existing and emerging middleware infrastructure.

NSF awards grant for ViDe.Net project

Congratulations to ViDe on the successful award of a grant from the National Science Foundation for the project "ViDe.Net: Middleware for Scalable Video Services for Research and Higher Education." The collaboration involves Jill Gemmill (UAB), Samir Chatterjee (CGU), Tyler Johnson (UNC), Egon Verharen (SURFnet), and RADVISION. The project will last two years and will produce a videoconferencing application directory (based on CommObject) and management for testbed activities/results propagation.

DRM/NMI Workshop Planning Underway

Grace Agnew and Mairead Martin of the ViDe Digital Rights Management working group have just received an award from the NSF NMI program to conduct an invitational workshop - "The NMI and DRM". The workshop is also being endorsed by CNI, EDUCAUSE, I2, SURA, and ViDe, and will be held mid-August in Washington, DC. The workshop will focus on exploring how the work of the NMI might be leveraged towards a DRM implementation for R&E, the idea of a rights metadata core and the launching of an initiative to pursue this, and the establishment of an NMI Digital Content Working Group.

NSF Middleware Initiative Release 1.0

NMI-R1 was released on May 7, 2002. It integrates key software packages, standards, and best practices toward formation of a national middleware infrastructure for science, engineering and education. Downloads are free to the public.

The National Science Foundation issued a press release describing NMI-R1, which features deliverables from the two NMI project teams: GRIDS and EDIT.

The NMI consists partially of video middleware (CommObject) that was
contributed by the ViDe/Internet2 collaborative VidMid working group. The
NMI provides standardized, authoritative directory and authentication
services for both videoconferencing and video on demand.
