Curriculum vitae (PDF)
Research
My research area is computer networks with a particular focus on how to introduce novel functionality into network systems and the overall network architecture. My students and I work on future network architecture, router systems, and embedded system and network security. We approach these problems from a theoretical as well as practical angle and place emphasis on the implementation of prototype systems for validation and to obtain quantitative performance data.
Future Network Architecture
I am lead principle investigator for the ChoiceNet project, one of five large Future Internet Architecture (FIA) projects sponsored by the National Science Foundation. ChoiceNet aims to make technological choices in the network explicitly visible. Users and their applications can select from these choices and financially reward the providers with the best offers. As a result, economic incentives can be used to drive innovation in the network.
Packet Processing Systems and Security
A big interest of mine is the design and operation of packet processing systems, i.e., the processors that implement protocol processing on routers. In the past, we have looked at design and runtime operation of these devices. More recently, we have turned our focus on security issues. We have shown that simple vulnerabilities in protocol processing code can be exploited to launch denial-of-service attacks by simply sending a malformed data packet through the router! As a defense, we are currently designing and prototyping a hardware monitoring system that can track processor operation and identify deviations caused by attacks.
Network Virtualization
Virtualization of networks allows the deployment of multiple different networks on a shared infrastructure. This approach may provide the necessary foundations for a future Internet where diverse protocol stacks coexist in a single network infrastructure. Our work addresses virtual network mapping, a key operational problem, where logical nodes and links need to be mapped to physical nodes and paths. We have developed new algorithms to solve this problem as well as a new benchmark to allow for fair comparison across algorithms. Equipment for this project has been donated by Intel.
Past Projects
In past work, I have looked at:
- Network processors: design space exploration, performance models, workload partitioning, and runtime management.
- In-network services: router system design to support advanced processing service in the network, routing with service requirements and policy constraints.
- Network measurement: high-performance passive measurements systems based on network processors, real-time trace anonymization.
