The research community is ever more reliant on software, much of which is developed within the community. The Software Sustainability Institute supports better research by helping researchers to build and use better software.

Securing a future for your software requires more than just quality code, which is why we do more than just providing access to expert developers.

We help build communities that care about specific issues that are important to software. We help people to engage their own communities to increase the uptake of their software. We provide training to ensure that people have the skills to develop reliable, reusable and reproducible code. We engage with the research community to discover the issues that are most important to software, and ensure that these are widely communicated.

Our work focusses on four themes that are fundamental to research in the digital age: community, consultancy, policy and training.

The Institute is based at the universities of Edinburgh, Manchester, Oxford and Southampton, and draws on a team of experts with a breadth of experience in software development, project and programme management, research facilitation, communications and community engagement.
