"Welcome Abroad is the soundtrack to a dream - overlaying a cabaret with the circus, a music hall with the radio, a nightclub with the movies. Finely tuned sounds from the collective unconscious, fitted together with care and clarity and skill, producing a hallucinatory landscape that shifts and slides, shimmering with each new sample. Julie Andrews duets with Jim Morrison? Damn." -Steinski
2nd release from Junk Culture, who will be touring with Girl Talk from NYC to Las Vegas (Feb. 24-Mar. 25). Deepak Mantena developed the sound for his newest release, Summer Friends, from a lifetime collection of sounds he'd captured on a handheld recorder. Drawing on inspiration he found in the vibrant harmonies, psychedelic noises and dance rhythms that saturated his environment, he created alluring melodies using guitar, keyboard, and percussion and topped them off with choruses of his own explosive vocals.

The fruit of many years of work, this album began as People Like Us & Wobbly collected and collaged their way through various depictions of misfired communications and heartbreak sourced from popular culture for a series of live improvisations. Music For The Fire is a plunderphonic concept album depicting the lifespan of a relationship, as told through samples of hundreds of different songs and voices who had no idea they were all telling the same story until they were all spliced together.
On Love Him, Italian turntablist and sampling artist, Okapi (Filippo Paolini), masterfully conducts a plundered symphony of more than 100 elements to celebrate the notorious Kyrgyz composer Aldo Kapi (1896-1952). Somewhere in between record digging, electro-acoustic tomfoolerly and slot-machine soundcards, lies the break-NOT-core, bubble-gum experimentalism of this new full-length from Italy's own "Daft Giraffe."
A new project by Deepak Mantena, who was recently signed to Illegal Art. On West Coast, Deepak's samples are all run through a handheld recorder that gives his constructions a gritty lo-fi loop-based sound, mixing fractured vocals, pop hooks, and an overall euphoric warmth.
Formed in 1992 amidst tape and zine trading scenes, The Bran Flakes already have seven releases of zany mashups and poppy audio collages that are more likely to cop a riff from Evel Knievel than anything on the current radio dial. Six years since their last release, they return with the absurdly entertaining I Have Hands.
Pittsburgh artist Gregg Gillis (aka Girl Talk) has scrupulously created music from samples for over eight years. His fourth album, Feed the Animals, continues his sonic evolution towards his party-infested live shows. With hours of material collected from two years of live shows, Gillis meticulously edited together a seamless album that combines 300+ samples.
Steve Stein is one of the most influential producers in hiphop, sampling, and cut & paste. Known simply as Steinski, his legendary mixes with Double Dee, “The Lessons,” are cited as definitive influences by DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist and Fatboy Slim, among others. What Does It All Mean?: 1983-2006 Retrospective is the first and only official Steinski collection.
"In true Illegal Art fashion, Jane Dowe and Hank Hofler’s first full-length as Oh Astro is comprised almost solely of sampled material. Champions of Wonder is an experimental conglomeration of glitchy techno, ambient, and broken-beat, all layered with distorted vocals that offset the album’s poppier moments with ghostly eeriness." -XLR8R
Realistic's third album, Perpetual Memory Loss, features sixteen tracks of intricate sample-based compositions - a beautifully sophisticated celebration of found sound, recorded media, technology, and electronic composition. Slices of field recordings mesh with surreal electronic melodies, which creates enjoyably odd multi-layered musical fun. Realistic is the guise of sound collage artist James Towning, by day a Brooklyn-based motion-graphics designer.
On The Edge is a documentary covering the brutal murders of hundreds of poor young women in the border town of Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, murders that have been repeatedly ignored and unresolved by police and governments since 1993, despite the continued and persistent efforts of family members and activists to obtain justice for the victims.
Girl Talk's 3rd album. It bangs as a continuous mix packed with wildly disparate Top 40 genres and eras. Hip hop hits, soft rock radio standards, party classics, grunge masterpieces, R&B singles, glossy club-shakers, and rock anthems are all layered and pieced meticulously together into one non-stop celebration of pop and excess.
Vinyl versions: 180 gram double LP in deluxe gatefold packaging.
P. Miles carves out an addictive mix where the songs are both altered and preserved. In the end the listener is left with a dizzying yet amazingly friendly collage that merges fascism with interior decorating.
