spacer Rebecca Susman – Membership and Outreach Manager

Becca is an avid cyclist who first got a taste of the Pittsburgh hills in 2003. Another casualty of the PGH boomerang, she commuted by bike in several cities before cycling back to attend grad school. Biking the new paths and lanes with her friends helped her to find a home in the bicycling community. Now holding a Masters in Social work with a concentration in Community Organizing and Social Administration, she is thrilled to be able to work with the community that has given her so much.  Rebecca can be reached via email at rebecca@bikepgh.org

Mike Carroll – Events Coordinatorspacer

Mike is an enthusiast for all things pedal powered.  At the University of Pittsburgh Mike’s passion for cycling began on a different path than most, with just one wheel. As a unicyclist he has medaled at international competitions in Canada and France.  With 10 years of experience in event management, Mike has traveled the world with the “quirky acrobatic” Zany Umbrella Circus. In 2011 he helped bring back the Steel City Showdown, Western PA’s premier bicycle race.

You can reach Mike at mike@bikepgh.org

Board of Directors

spacer Phillip Bender, Secretary (Board Member since 2009)

Phil, an environmental lawyer and founder partner of Ring Bender McKown & Castillo, grew up on BMX bikes in the wilds of the San Francisco Bay Area; graduated to a 1953 Columbia tandem during college in Portland, Oregon, mostly for romantic reasons; broke a bunch of mountain bikes racing around the Pacific Northwest in his 20s; commuted on random jury-rigged spare parts while working in government after law school; and now chases his two kids down the trails and backroads of our amazing city on a bamboo unicycle. Well, maybe not a unicycle, but everything else is true. Phil also serves as General Counsel to Riverlife and is a Leadership Pittsburgh Inc. graduate.

You can reach Phil at phil@bike-pgh.org

spacer Edward Engler, Vice President (Founding Board Member since 2002)

Ed is the founder and Chairman of Summa Technologies, Inc., a Pittsburgh-based software consulting firm. He is also a General Partner with Pittsburgh Equity Partners. spacer Nancy Furbee (Board Member since 2011)

Nancy can’t get enough of the out-of-doors – whether on a bicycle, on a horse, hiking through the woods, or cross country skiing, she loves spending her free time outside.

Though a well-traveled mountain biker for over a decade or two, Nancy’s cycling career has adapted to include road biking, and, specifically, raising money for various charities through each stroke of her pedals.

Additionally, she loves taking her nephew and beginners on bike rides in the Pittsburgh area. A new fan of the “city trails”, Nancy is motivated to make the city (and the region!) a place safe for cyclists, pedestrians and automobiles alike. She would make a great Safety Patrol with a bright orange vest.

Nancy lives in the Wexford area and is proud to call Pittsburgh home. She is a graduate of North Hills High School and holds a master degree in Human Resources from La Roche College. A recent graduate of the Leadership Pittsburgh program, Nancy combines her love of networking and her 20+ year HR career to successfully lead her HR consulting firm, Furbee and Associates LLC. Of course, if all of her clients were cyclists (and, many of them are!), she would live her dream by conducting all planning sessions on two wheels.

spacer Beth Hazlett (Board Member since 2010)

Beth is a Strategic Account Manager for McGraw-Hill Construction, a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies.  Beth cannot remember a time when she did not ride a bike – there are even pictures of her on the back of her Dad’s bike when she was a baby.  A native of Pittsburgh, she loves cycling on the roads here and overseas.  Most vacations are spent on a bicycle traveling the roads of another country.   She is passionate about the idea that bikes and cars can safely share the road.  She is also passionate about getting as many people on bicycles as possible – it’s fun and it’s healthy.  Beth rides with Lou’s Crew on most Saturdays and Sundays.  Her favorite “city ride” is to the top of Mt. Washington either in the early morning or just before sunset. Beth also serves as an Ambassador at the Pittsburgh Public Theater. She is a graduate of Fox Chapel High School and Smith College.

You can reach Beth at beth@bike-pgh.org

spacer Mac Howison, President (Board Member since 2008)

Mac holds a BFA in Painting from Carnegie Mellon University, and is a Camp Dudley, YMCA alumnus. A musician and amateur bike mechanic, Mac spends most of his time with his family around their 1901 Frederick Schiebler home in Swissvale. His wife Jennifer is an avid cyclist and their children Mev and Mason will sometimes join them on two wheels.

spacer Mike Kotyk (Board Member since 2012)

Mike’s passion for cycling and bicycle advocacy stems from both his professional career and personal life. He has also received a proclamation from the City of Pittsburgh for advocating for safer streets and promoting bicycling for people of all ages, both for recreation and as an alternative means of transportation.

Mike was able to work with Bike Pittsburgh and the League of American Bicyclists to establish Pashek Associates and OTB Bicycle Café as Bicycle Friendly employers both locally and nationally.

In his spare time, Mike enjoys Mountain Biking with his wife Erin or riding the rail trails with his two small children Aidan and Addison. When he is able, Mike enjoys commuting to work by bicycle from his home in the South Hills. You can reach Mike at mike@otbbicyclecafe.com

spacer Susan Petersen (Board Member since 2012)

Shortly after moving to Pittsburgh in 1989, Susan’s darkest fears about the status of biking in Pittsburgh were confirmed when the city was named worst city for biking. Coming from pedaling the awesome cycling infrastructure in Germany and Denmark, this was quite a blow. So the tremendous progress of recent years is even more thrilling and Susan is honored to be able to contribute to making Pittsburgh more bike friendly.

Susan and her husband Stefan Frembgen can be seen biking around the East End where they live and own a business. They also enjoy bike touring. Memorable trips include the Great Allegheny Passage-B&O Canal trail to Washington, DC; and a family tour with Adventure Cycling in Colorado. They have three children, Ingrid, Marco & Renée. A native of Michigan, Susan has degrees from the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin.

*Bike Pittsburgh is currently working with a consultant to build a deliberate strategy for board recruitment and focus our goals for selection. During this process we are not actively seeking new board members.

Here’s a short video of the BikePGH staff in action…typing away at our computers. Jokes aside, it is informative and you’ll get to know us a bit more and see our office.
