Beginning Painting

Learn to find and express your unique painting personality.  Emphasis will be on understanding good composition and color harmony that relates to any subject matter, whether abstract or realistic.

We will explore new techniques and ways to achieve various textures and interesting effects, and most importantly enjoy the journey!

Tara J Belk is a local artist who loves teaching and encouraging creativity in others. She holds a Bachelor of Creative Arts degree with a concentration in painting & clay sculpture and has maintained a pottery studio in Trade, TN since 2003. Her work can be seen online at  www.tarabelkart.com  and at Hands Gallery and Artwalk in Boone, NC .

Supply List: 

White Gesso, (I use Cheap Joes brand)
Watercolor Paper (140lb.) or canvas panels
Acrylic Paints: Any Blue, Yellow and Red  (you pick the shade! I use Perm. Rose, Ultramarine Blue, and Cadmium Yellow Med.), plus a Burnt Sienna and Alizarin Crimson  (2oz tubes or larger)
Brushes recommended: 1” Flat,  ½” Flat and #10 Round (I use Watercolor Brushes instead of those Really Stiff ones they suggest for oils)
White Plastic sheeting for the table (large garbage bags will work)
One Pint or larger water container
Roll of Paper Towels (I recommend VIVA they are stronger)

Registration will begin on the following dates, and remain open until this class start date, or until this class reaches capacity:

  • FALL SESSION: August 1 at noon
  • SPRING SESSION: December 1 at noon
  • SUMMER SESSION: May 1 at noon

PLEASE NOTE: You may cancel a craft class up to two weeks before the class begins, with a $30 cancellation fee assessed. No refunds are allowed within two weeks of the start date, nor after the class begins.

PLEASE NOTE: Most classes meet over multiple weeks. Registration for each class is open until the class fills, or until three days before the class begins. If you miss the registration for this semester we hope you will consider taking this class the next time it is offered. Please contact Ashley Haass to be added to the mailing list if you would like to be notified when new classes are offered. Contact information is at the bottom of the page.
