TONER PRIZE

The Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting is awarded annually by the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University for the best national or local political reporting of the previous year in any medium or on any platform – print, broadcast or online. The Prize includes a $5,000 award for the winner and will be presented in the spring.

Entries for for 2014 coverage will be accepted starting Dec. 1, 2014.

The Toner Prize recognizes outstanding political reporting in a tribute to Robin Toner, the late national political correspondent for The New York Times and a summa cum laude graduate of Syracuse University with dual degrees in journalism and political science.

Deadline for entries is Jan. 19, 2015, by midnight. If your stories are behind a paywall, please contact the Toner Program administrator, Charlotte Grimes, for information on how to submit them. The email is cgrimes@syr.edu.

To be eligible, entries must be fact-based reporting, not commentary.

Entries included single articles, a series or a body of work. Only one submission of five stories for a contestant. The stories were published, posted online or broadcast in the preceding calendar year: Jan. 1, 2014, through Dec. 31, 2014.

Entries will be judged on how well they reflect the high standards and depth of reporting that marked the work of Robin Toner. In particular, the judges will look for how well the entries:

  • Illuminate the electoral process or
  • Reveal the politics of policy and
  • Engage the public in democracy.
