GUEST: OLIVER OSBORNE

“Some time in the early 20th century the contours of painting changed, the accurate tracings of figuration newly awash with the abstract. Oliver Osborne’s paintings seem to ask questions about these diversions and the institutions they have come to embody. What do we now expect of abstraction, his resolute works seem to ask? Does it assume a singular tone? Are they all stern and profound, as opposed to the pliancy of figuration? Could abstract and figurative paintings be produced in the same tone, key, palette? And if so, would we navigate, read, see them anew?” (Isobel Harbison on cura.magazine No.13.)
