radioinfo | February 4, 2013

LOS ANGELES — Over the past week or so, we have extensively detailed results from Arbitron’s “Holiday” 2012 survey period. Noted here in past “Holiday” 2012 ratings overviews have been such breakouts as stations finishing first and second in their respective PPM markets; highlighting the top 40 finishers (by 6+ AQH share); and indexing those stations to a comparable “Holiday” 2011 top 40.

In the final installment, we focus on the more than five-dozen facilities that registered (6+) December 2012 – “Holiday” 2012 improvement of at least one share. In addition, in hopes of seeing which formats are most commonly wounded in the same sweep, stations declining by at least one full share are shown.

Only Arbitron subscribers are eligible.

San Diego’s KOGO-FM – denoted by “@” – began the ratings period as a talk station; stunted with all-Christmas music; and after the first of the year, became rhythmic oldies as “Kiss-FM.” Read More

By Mike Kinosian

LOS ANGELES — In the past week, we have chronicled the astonishing PPM “Holiday” ratings period success enjoyed by the great majority of stations that took the all-Christmas route.

Time now to address what has become one of the most pertinent questions in the past several years: Has the all-Christmas music phenomenon peaked?

Holiday 2012 Top 40 By (6+) Share

To establish perspective, we have noted the 40 stations that registered the highest 6+ shares in the “Holiday” 2012 sweep. With three exceptions (KJMS, WQMG, and WPRO-FM), all those in this particular breakout finished first in their respective markets.

Holiday Toppers

LOS ANGELES — In its albeit relatively short history, Arbitron’s “Holiday” ratings period has given a window of opportunity for some stations – predominantly those adult contemporary outlets playing all-Christmas music – to not only register  their highest 6+ stats of the year, but also achieve vaunted #1 or #2 market status.

In Memphis, for example, Entercom AC WRVR (“The River”) had watched cross-town KJMS fashion an absolutely amazing accomplishment: The Clear  Channel urban AC sat atop the #1 spot in all 27 previous PPM surveys. As of this “Holiday” report though – appropriately enough – “The River” is the new #1 in the “River City.”

It is the equivalent of running the board when one format has representatives ranked #1 in more than 70% of the 48 PPM markets in a given survey period, but that is precisely what AC did (71.4%) in the “Holiday” 2012 sweep.

The following scoreboard summarizes each format’s #1 and #2 stations (6+, “Holiday” 2012) and indicates adult contemporary’s utter dominance.
