CECE Professors Dr Abdel-Aty and Dr Catbas attended International Congress on Advances in Civil Engineering. The Congress was hosted by Istanbul Technical University in Istanbul, Turkey. During the Congress, Dr Abdel-Aty and Dr Catbas presented their work, met with some of the former visiting scholars to UCF, networked with infrastructure owners and discussed possible collaborations. -

Wrong-way driving may be more common than thought.
A study conducted by Haitham Al-Deek of the University of Central Florida suggests the number of wrong-way drivers who don't get ticketed could be even higher. The study found that only 10 percent of drivers who witness a wrong-way driver called police.

Dr. Tatari has recently accepted the editor-in-chief’s invitation to join the Editors Board of The International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment as Subject Editor for “Roadways and Infrastructure.” The International Journal of Life Cycle Assessment is the first journal devoted entirely to Life Cycle Assessment and closely related methods. It is considered to be one of top journals in the field of sustainability. LCA has become a recognized instrument to assess the ecological burdens and impacts throughout the consecutive and interlinked stages of a product system, from raw material acquisition or generation from natural resources, through production and use to final disposal. -
UCF Student and President Obama Talk Highway Safety, Innovation
Lochrane, who has two UCF engineering degrees and is on track to earn a Ph.D. this fall, showed President Obama a vehicle he customized with special sensors and how the technology could make highways less congested and safer to travel. Obama highlighted the technology during the first few minutes of his speech.read more

The First International Road Traffic Accident Conference was held at Rose Wood Hotel, Abu Dhabi on 10th-11th March, 2014 to bring together transportation engineers and medical physicians in joint sessions. Dr. Essam Radwan delivered the first day keynote speech titled “Mortality from road crashes in 193 countries: A comparison with other leading causes of death”.
On the second day, Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Aty’s keynote talk was titled “The Viability of Proactive Traffic Management Using Big Data Safety Analytics”.

Dr. Scott C. Hagen elected ASCE Fellow
Scott C. Hagen , Ph.D., P.E., D.CE, D.WRE, F.ASCE, is a Professor at the University of Central Florida and a member of the Board of Governors for the ASCE / Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute. Dr. Hagen established and directs the internationally recognized Coastal Hydroscience Analysis, Modeling & Predictive Simulations laboratory.

Dr. Necati Catbas elected ASCE Fellow
F. Necati Catbas, Ph.D., P.E, F.ASCE, Professor of Civil, Environmental and Construction Engineering at the University of Central Florida, has recently been elected a Fellow in the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). Dr. Catbas expertise is in the area of civil infrastructure systems with special emphasis on structural health monitoring, structural identification, bridge engineering.

17th IRF World Meeting & Exhibition November 10-14, 2013
Dr. Radwan attended the 17th IRF World Meeting & Exhibition held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia during the period of November 10-14, 2013. 2,000 delegates representing more than 40 countries attended the meeting. Dr. Radwan served as the Technical and Scientific Program chair. The RSS2013 (Roadway Safety and Simulation) International Conference held in Rome Italy, October 23-25 Dr. Radwan was invited to be the keynote speaker at the 4th Road safety and Simulation Conference held at the University of Roma TRE, Rome, Italy during the period October 23-25. The topic of his speech is “Discrete Event and Human-Centered Simulation”. He also presented a paper titled “Drivers’ Risk Attitude Correlation with Driving Safety” and chaired a session on driving simulators.

Five students from UCF’s Coastal Hydroscience, Analysis and Predictive Simulations (CHAMPS) Laboratory attended the first annual Young Coastal Scientists and Engineers Conference - North America (YCSEC-NA) 2014 held at the University of Delaware. UCF Student Wins Prestigious Award
March 13, 2014. Las Vegas, Nevada. At the 2014 Membrane Technology Conference and Exposition, jointly presented by the American Water Works Association and the American Membrane Technology Association, UCF graduate student Samantha Jeffery was awarded with one of three scholarships in support of her research specific to membrane technologies entitled “In-Plant and Distribution System Corrosion Control for Reverse Osmosis, Nanofiltration and Anion Exchange Process Blends.”The research is ongoing at the Town of Jupiter Florida’s water treatment campus; the Town has been funding UCF since 2009 to research a variety of issues designed to enhance the community’s drinking water supply. March 2014 - The ASCE-UCF Chapter was very successful in this year's ASCE Southeast Student Competitions that was hosted by the University of South Florida in Tampa. Overall, our Chapter was ranked 2nd out of 24 universities who competed in this year's competitions, "the" best overall placement it has ever achieved in its history.

Dr. HagenDr. Scott Hagen received the Dean’s Research Professorship Award. This award is intended to recognize the efforts of our most research productive faculty and the outstanding value that they bring to their classroom teaching, as well as to the unambiguous value of the research mentorship that they offer to undergraduate and graduate students that are apprentices in their labs. Award recipients will receive an annual allotment of $10,000 that can be used for purposes allowable for PI research overhead funds. The allotment of support will be available to the recipients at the start of the 2013-2014 academic year. -
