Javier Vela, scientist with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ames Laboratory, has been selected as a 2014 recipient of the Stanley C. Israel Regional Award for Advancing Diversity in Chemical Sciences. The award, given by the American Chemical Society (ACS),  honors those who have created and fostered ongoing programs or activities that result in increased numbers of persons from diverse and underrepresented minority groups, persons with disabilities, or women who participate in the chemical enterprise. Things are really starting to take shape on Ames Laboratory's new Sensitive Instrument Facility. Precast wall and roof panels, which are trucked in on flatbed semi trailers, are being installed.

A dedication ceremony was held Oct. 6 to unveil a bronze bust of Ames Laboratory program director and Iowa State University distinguished professor and Center for Non-destructive Evaluation director, the late R. Bruce Thompson. The bust, created by artist Rebecca Ekstrand, was commissioned through the donations of Thompson's former students and is on display at the Applied Science II building which houses the CNDE.
