“We bought the lot in spite of the house” was the comment first mentioned by the client, as we started this project. Surely a distinct change from the original, this project was completed in two separate phases. The first phase resolved the immediate need for an adequate parking arrangement to accommodate New England winters, so a two car garage was placed within the steeply sloping hillside.

Secondly, we leveled the original home to the foundation to prepare for this four bedroom home to be built.

This home is nestled within a traditional setting and required an attention to detail to respond to the variation in height of the existing lot. We arranged a series of horizontal lines and forms to offset the towering effect brought on by the hillside. The observatory from the Master Bedroom projects outward to engage a powerful view toward the west while providing shelter to the roof deck from the study.
