Frequently Asked Questions / Terms

Can I reclaim the VAT?
Probably. We can't say it for sure, since it's different in every country. Please get in touch with whoever is responsible for that in your country. They will be a way better help than we could be. We really are sorry we can't offer a price "without" VAT, but our since the "Product" (read: the conference) is "consumed" in Germany, the german law forces us to do so.
Do you have a special price for students?
We don't.
How many places/tickets do you have?
Right now we plan for 120 attendees. We may add a few places if we are sold out, but it's not certain and it's even less certain it will be at the same price. We also need some places for Speakers, staff, and so on... If you look at Paydro, you'll be able to see how many are left right now...
Can I cancel / request a refund?
If you're unsure about coming, start by placing an order via invoice/bank transfer instead of credit card. The main reason is we won't be able to refund credit card paid tickets until after the conference. That said, we can't refund fully, because from the moment you confirm by paying, you actually cost us. So we decided we'll keep a fixed amount of 70 € / Ticket if you want a refund. That only works up until 14 days before the conference starts. Passing that day, we won't be able to refund anyone. We hope you understand. It also means if you don't/can't come on that day and havn't "arranged" the refund previously we can't refund you your Ticket afterwards. Furthermore, ordering a ticket via Bank Transfer will give you 2 weeks to pay, so plenty of time to think about it.

One last thing: if you convince 2 of your friends to buy tickets, we'll give you a complete refund once those 2 have paid. Just be sure to tell us their names beforehand. We think it's the "fairest" way to handle this case -- all you have to do is promote us with your direct friends or colleagues. If you ordered during our Early Bird promotion, one person will be enough. If you are a company and your Attendee can't attend but you can substitute someone else from the same company, then it's even easier: Just CHANGE the name with the link on the Invoice. Or ask us.
What would happen if the conference doesn't happen?
I dare you think about it! It will happen :) That said, if, for any reasons, ObjCGN wouldn't happen, we would obviously refund anyone FULLY. We can't refund your Hotel, Travel or any other "side" costs, but worst case you enjoy the beautiful city of Cologne! Again, with now over 40 Tickets sold, we are "Fired Up! Ready To Go!".
Is the schedule definitive?
Besides the "TBA" session in the morning of the second day, it looks like it is. That said, we can't say for sure it will be. We hope every single speaker will be there and every single session will happen, but obviously we can't promise 100% because a Speaker could be sick, or a Flight could be canceled, or, or, or... In any case we'll have some speakers prepare a "backup" session and if you, as an attendee, would like to "suggest" yourself as such a "backup", you're welcome! That means, although we don't have an official "Call for papers", you're welcome to submit a paper to us, just in case some of the sessions can't happen. And hey, your "Semi" Call for Paper might get you invited as a speaker next year!
Internet connectivity
First and foremost, by buying a Ticket, you agree to not use the Internet connection during the conference for anything like downloading pirated software, porn,... Furthemore, although we'll do our best to serve you with the nicest speed and infrastructure, we can't promise anything. We'll do anything we can, but especially since this is our first time, we hope you'll understand. We kindly ask anyone (read: probably germans) having a "direct" option (read: a 3G connection) to use it, since some people (basically foreigners) will need our internet connection.
Stolen or Lost Items
Turns out Germany is "famous" for being pretty "safe" (here's the guy who arrived here 9 years ago speaking). Still, we can't be taken responsible if any of your belongings get stolen or lost during the conference. Whether at the location, or in your hotel, or even in the street (!), it is your sole responsibility to check that your clothes, laptop, phone, kids,... are still with you.
You're on camera & on the Internet
We understand your privacy concerns, and we will never put your address, phone number, or any embarrassing picture of you on our website. Still, as with many conferences of this type, we reserve us the right to display your name, twitter handle, and any (decent) pictures as an attendee. It's just too much work to retouch every single picture. Those pictures or video will end up on Twitter, Facebook, or any other "Internet", so you'll have to "get along" with it -- but I think you'll be fine.
Jurisdiction
We hope it won't happen (we really do -- trials sucks -- been there, done that), but if any contentius would happen, it would be done in Cologne, Germany and only by German laws. We won't use any other base and we won't travel at the end of the world.
Terms of others
Consider this FAQ as our terms, but please do remember we are subject to Paydro's terms (when you order a ticket) and the ones from our location.

Locations & Food (Yeah, and Drinks! All inclusive!)

YES, we are doing the 2013 Edition at the exact same locations as last year: Alte Versteigerungshalle & Küchenloft!!!

Enough of the "usual" hotel for a Conference? Well we found something "different" for you. What about an old Auction House, in the middle of a Market?
Yup, that's what we found. It's called "Alte Versteigerungshalle" in German and it's pretty amazing. Check this out:
spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer

ALTE VERSTEIGERUNGSHALLE - Marktstraße 10 - 50968 Cologne - Germany

As for the food, it will be provided by 2 amazing Companies. During the days, lunch will be provided by Kaiserschotte. As you may know, your ticket gives you as well entrance to the Conference Dinner, which will not be at the main location, but a few hundred meters away, provided by Porschen Art Cooking.

Accomodation

Although the price does not include accomodation, we have right now 2 "solutions" for you. The "Hotel" options, which you can find in this PDF is the "closest" nearby hotels. The "cheaper" option is probably the one the conference organisation will choose though, and this is, for now, the Youth Hostel in Deutz. This one has also the advantage of being more in the center of the city, where you might want to spent your time before / after the conference. If you go there (Youth Hostel), be sure to mention you come for the "Apple Developer Conference" as we try to make a "group" there.

Travel

Once you've booked your ticket, you might as well go ahead and book your Train (to Cologne "Hbf"/Central Station) or Flight (to Cologne/Bonn "CGN" airport), if you don't come by car. We'll give attendees more details about how to reach the different locations (old Auction House, Hotels, ...) should they need it.

"WWSJD: What Would Steve Jobs Do?"

Buy for 2 €

Many have sought to understand the mind of Steve Jobs, but few have gone through the effort of working at Apple, taking psychedelic drugs, or stalking Joan Baez. Mike Lee has done at least two of those things.
Join the World's Toughest Programmer for an inspiring and poignant exploration of who Steve Jobs was—not just how he was, but why. We'll watch archival footage of and about the man himself, and we'll ask the hard questions that other biographers have not.
We'll learn about the effects of chronic, long-term sleep deprivation on the brain. We'll find out what it takes to recruit and retain the smartest people in the world. We'll go beyond merely thinking different, and seek out the underlying truths behind Apple's meteoric success.
To learn about Steve is to learn about life and, ultimately, to learn a little something about ourselves. Don't miss this one-of-a-kind look at the Genius of Cupertino, and the genius in us all.

If you buy Drew's video (52 Minutes!), you'll see one of the ways we spent the morning. With CODE! Drew brought two interesting examples of Blocks & Boxing/Unboxing which we solved "together" ;-)

"The Joys and Perils of Typography in Cocoa"

Buy for 2 €

Typography has always been an issue close to Apple’s heart. In this talk, a brief overview of typographic concepts and available text technologies on OS X and iOS will be given, with a more in-depth look at Core Text. Besides fundamentals of programming a C-based Apple-API and the principles of the framework (including an important CTFramesetter workaround), an example of a high-level wrapper architecture for easier typesetting will be examined. Finally, new light-weight alternatives to Core Text, which are introduced in iOS 6, will be presented.

"Localization: You should have seen me earlier,
the Doctor said."

Buy for 2 €

Localization is often regarded as a painful part of software development and therefore often postponed until ... forever. However, postponing is the problem itself. By considering potential problems at an early stage, localization can be integrated almost seamlessly into software and business development. Instead of prescribing painkillers, we show you when and how to integrate localization into the software and the business development process – making it a less costly and less painful experience not worth worrying about.

I think it's very important to note I'm not a big Event Organizing Company doing 30 Conferences a year about anything and everything in Technology. I really only care about the iPhone, the iPad, the Mac, well, anything The Mothership does.

What kind of weirdo goes by a nickname?
Well, it turns out I used to be a .Net Developer (shhh, don't tell anybody) and around the same time discovered the Mac. That was 2000. Later, in 2005, there was this thing called "Podcasting" which arrived. I started the first podcast about  for the french speaking community. Since I live in Germany since 2003, I started it as well in German, then obviously had to do it in English, and, finally, since my origin are in Andalucia, I started in in Spanish. When the iPhone SDK came along in 2008, I finally made the switch to Cocoa, and, guess what, I never looked back. Today, I spent most of my time either programming or teaching iOS programming. I also spend some time with my other love: Ruby On Rails.

Long story short: ObjCGN is/was an awesome conference started in 2012. (that's what people told me!)
In 2013, we struggled to have as much attendees, but it was still awesome — for the attendees.
In 2014, because @stuffmc didn't wanna struggle, he tried (and failed) an Indiegogo option.
Even though it's super tuff to organize conferences, we'll give it a try. We? Sponsors, attendees, Stuff, and maybe somehow a team behind him. Will we?
