Frequently Asked Questions about the TRLN Endeca Dataset

About the Search TRLN Dataset

The TRLN Endeca System indexes approximately 13.7 million metadata records from the Duke, NCCU, NCSU, and UNC integrated library systems. Approximately 7,800 of these records are enriched with content from EAD finding aids from archival collections. These records are also enriched with over 6.3 million chapter authors and 30 million chapter titles provided by Syndetics.

Over 230,000 records are currently maintained in the TRLN Shared Records Program. In this program, one institution in the consortium takes responsibility for maintaining metadata for particular collections. This process distributes responsibility and costs associated with maintaining metadata and reduces duplicate technical services activities.

The index is rebuilt every Sunday morning beginning at 2 AM. This process is usually complete by noon on Sunday.

Updating frequency

Every hour, the TRLN Endeca System receives updates from the Integrated Library systems at the four institutions. These changes include new bibliographic records, changes to bibliographic records, changes in circulation status, or the removal of records from the index. These changes are processed every hour between noon on Sunday of each week and Saturday night at midnight. The changes can be seen in the indexes at 30 minutes past the hour. For instance, a record edit made at 9:15 am will be available in the indexes at 10:30 am that day.

Changes which occur during the reindexing process are held and applied after the reindexing is complete. The current update status for each institution is noted below.
