La Palma Biosphere Reserve Launches Action Plan
6 March 2013: The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has announced that the La Palma Biosphere Reserve, in the Canary Islands, Spain, has launched its 2013-2022 Action Plan. The Plan's slogan is βAll Voices, All Hands,β and reflects its emphasis on the active participation of citizens.
According to UNESCO, a portion of La Palma was declared a biosphere reserve in 1983, and the entire island a reserve in 2000. UNESCO says that the social, economic and environmental impacts of changes since 2000 have necessitated delving deeper into the inherent values of the biosphere reserve concept in order to reinforce the principles of sustainability.
UNESCO says the Action Plan seeks the participation of local citizens, and focuses on sovereignty, recycling, responsible consumption, and health and safety. [UNESCO Press Release] [La Palma Bioreserve Website]
