GEF Launches Small Grants Country Programme in Saint Lucia

spacer 14 February 2013: The Global Environmental Facility (GEF) has formally launched the Small Grants Country Programme (SGP) in Saint Lucia, at Pigeon Island National Landmark, a key historic site and protected area.

The SGP in St. Lucia will provide grants to civil society organizations (CSOs) with the goal of identifying, replicating and scaling-up best practices in the country and among other Caribbean States. At the launch, Michelle Gyles-McDonnough, UNDP's Resident Representative, noted that to help provide a space for knowledge sharing and cooperation, the SGP will support the formation of a Sub-regional Technical Advisory Panel among SGP countries in the Eastern Caribbean.

On this occasion, which was attended by a number of government representatives as well as civil society members, the first five project grantees were recognized, which included two biodiversity conservation initiatives, two climate change initiatives and one chemicals-focused project. The five projects account for a total GEF SGP contribution of US$139,260 and have already attracted a total of US$124,303 in cash and in-kind co-funding.

The GEF Small Grants Programme supports activities of nongovernmental and community-based organizations in developing countries that are working to support sustainable livelihoods through climate change abatement, biodiversity conservation, international waters protection, the reduction of persistent organic pollutants and the prevention of land degradation. The programme is implemented by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) on behalf of the GEF. [GEF News] [SGP Website]
