spacer The EngineLab Machine, EngineLab's unique way of handling complex algorithms, provides the user with a simple-to-use interface for integrating novel technologies in a standard vehicle powertrain. The EngineLab Machine can control virtually any technology in the vehicle. A few of examples would be drive-by-wire, transmission control, clutch control, cruise control and traction control. Integration of newer technologies such as electric motor control, hydraulic and electric regenerative systems and battery monitoring can also be controlled with the EngineaLab Machine. The developer can design the control system to generate the correct mathematical computation and sense the hardware input and drive the hardware output using the correct specified timing.

Before describing the EngineLab architecture, a good starting point is to compare the basic differences between the EngineLab Machine and other systems available on the market. There exist two distinct approaches in engine management available today. These two distinct approaches are the aftermarket approach and the professional level approach. The aftermarket offers many ECU's where the systems expose the user to a series of tables and settings which allow the user to tune the vehicle powertrain. The tables generally consist of fuel maps, spark maps and enrichment maps along with a set of features that allow the user to perform fine adjustments to the system. The input and output of these systems generally have a set of harness pins available which can be programmed to perform some general functions with limited flexibility. These systems generally have a firmware image in the ECU that contains a fixed function behavior model that can run the engine. The fixed function behavior model contains the mathematical algorithms and timing control of the harness signals to run the engine. The firmware contains a set of tables and parameters that can be modified to tune custom add ons like turbo chargers, exhaust and intake systems, new camshafts, higher compression heads, etc.

The EngineLab solution is a direct approach to control system design. The performance of the latest generation of microprocessors, along with the robust set of hardware on-chip resources, has enabled EngineLab to formulate a novel solution. The EngineLab Machine is built on a real time operating system and exposes a simple application development interface to the control system designer. The EngineLab Machine is more a general control system than a fixed function engine controller. It does not require any compilers, assemblers, linkers or firmware development. The control algorithms are developed directly on the production level target hardware platform. The firmware of the EngineLab Machine does not contain a fixed function behavior model. The EngineLab firmware, apart from some low level timing control, contains no behavioral model code at all. The entire control system of the EngineLab Machine is downloaded to the system using the Host Console application. The EngineLab Machine provides the user with a toolbox of building blocks-math calculations, table lookups, conditional statements, timing control and hardware signal input and output-and a canvas on which the user can build any desired behavior. This might all sound complicated, but EngineLab also provides several working setups so the user can have a plug-and-play experience. Just download the configuration that best fits the desired engine application, and get started.
