LECTURE
"From Spears to Kalashnikovs: Warrior Theatre and the Construction of Masculinity in the North Rift, Kenya"
Sidney L. Kasfir, Heilbrun Distinguished Emeritus Fellow, Professor Emerita, Art History Department, Emory University
Dr. Kasfir will trace the meaning of the spear in the definition of masculinity and the gradual change from spears to guns as a result of the flow of illegal weapons out of neighboring Somalia and South Sudan. Sponsored by the Hood Museum of Art, The John Sloan Dickey Center for International Understanding, and the African and African-American Studies Program (AAAS).

About Face
Join this discussion-based workshop to learn about the various approaches that contemporary artists have used to explore identity in self-portraiture. Then, in the studio, experiment with a variety of materials to create your own self-portrait inspired by issues presented in the exhibition. No previous art experience necessary. Learning to Look: José Clemente Orozco's Mural
From 1932 to 1934, Mexican artist José Clemente Orozco painted The Epic of American Civilization, an ambitious mural in Baker Library. Come and explore this mural—now a national historic landmark—and learn techniques for interpreting any work of art. This workshop is discussion-based and participatory.
