Remembering Jim
Jim Valvano’s spirit, drive and determination carried him through his brief but illustrious life. From a determined little boy following his dreams, to becoming a coach, to a victorious leader who carried out his life goal by winning the 1983 NCAA Basketball National Championship, Jim achieved all the goals he set for himself.
Jim never gave up on his dreams. His final triumph came towards the end of his glorious life when he announced the formation of The V Foundation for Cancer Research at the 1993 ESPY Awards. Founded by ESPN and Jim Valvano, The V Foundation was established to carry out Jim’s final dream—to defeat cancer.
The success of The V Foundation is built upon Jim’s ability to personally touch the lives of others. Jim’s spirit lives on through his family, friends and the numerous supporters and fans who remember him. His famous words, “Don’t give up…don’t ever give up,” are not only a motivation to those battling cancer, but also serve as encouragement for those who want to help in the fight against this terrible disease.
