History (Books about the Book of Common Prayer) |
The Book of Common Prayer is one of the major works of English literature. Since its introduction in the mid-1500's it has exerted enormous influence on the religious and literary lives of all who speak the English language. The Book of Common Prayer has gone through a number of editions, not only in England where it originated, but in all the places where the various Churches of the Anglican Communion are now active. We present here several dozen Books of Common Prayer, and related works, from all over the Anglican Communion. Click on one of the links at left and start exploring. Or see the link below for books you can actually hold in your hands. |

What's New: New Additions, Revisions, and Future Projects. What's new here, and what will be coming (eventually).
A note about copyrights: I often receive email asking if such-and-such a Prayer Book is online. Usually the reason it is not is because it is under copyright and so may not be placed online without the copyright holder's permission. I do not have any such texts here, nor will I knowingly link to any such text placed online. Some of the texts which you may like to see here, but which aren't here because of copyright reasons include:
- The Book of Occasional Services (U. S. Episcopal Church)
- Enriching Our Worship (formerly Supplemental Liturgical Texts, from the U. S. Episcopal Church)
- The 1979 U. S. Book of Common Prayer in French
- A Prayer Book for Australia
- A New Zealand Prayer Book (online from the Anglican Church of NZ)
- The Canadian Book of Alternative Services (online from the Anglican Church of Canada)
- Common Worship from the Church of England (online from the Church of England)
How to compare the texts (without using frames!): One of the most useful ways to study the development of the Book of Common Prayer is to do side-by-side comparisons of the various editions. And it is actually possible for you to do this, right now, without using frames. Here's how.
